Quick competition – no prizes. All to come up with one big idea that would revolutionise racing in the UK for the betterment of all. We’ll then have a quick poll and decide which idea tops the lot.
February 24, 2010 at 21:07 #278900Get rid of bookmakers from within and adopt a tote monopoly.

5p in the £1 betting tax – on condition every penny goes to prize money.
February 24, 2010 at 21:17 #278902Exterminate off-course bookmakers.

February 24, 2010 at 21:29 #278904I agree with Expect To Win and seabird.
February 24, 2010 at 21:40 #278908None of the suggestions made so far are in any way realistic. Reet, it’s laughable to suggest taxing punters on turnover to line the pockets of arabian princes.
Many punters are facing serious problems in getting bookmakers to take genuine bets. I’m not talking about arbers, or people with inside information, I’m talking about genuine opinion-based punters who are getting their accounts restricted if they ever look like being remotely in the black.
What is needed is a genuine and robust alternative to this. I’m certainly not clever enough to come up with the answer but some sort of a combination of a betfair/lower take out tote combination might be the answer with the pools opened up globally with link ups with other PMU organisations.
Also the tote really should be developing the flexi-bet which wit has spoken of in Hong Kong where punters doing a £20 placepot can have it split into as many lines as they like with a pro-rata flexible unit stake. I imagine there’s nothing like putting off potentially new customers than them doing a placepot and ending up embarrased because the bet they thought would cost them a pound has justrattled up £128 on the till!.
February 24, 2010 at 21:41 #278910Agree that Tote monopoly would be good for funding racing but have other problems with it, as expressed above.
Would like to see AW racing sent back to its original concept; one meeting per day through the winter months only. That is, November to February.
February 24, 2010 at 21:43 #278911The Tote ditches its current operating model, and moves to an exchange model with an across the board 1% deduction/commission rate.
Racing would have more money than it would know what to do with (though I’m pretty sure they would find plenty of ways to spunk it up the wall).

In what way would this ‘revolutionise’ racing?
February 24, 2010 at 21:49 #278915Get Sky Sports interested.
February 24, 2010 at 22:01 #278920DJ it would help to re-establish a narrative for the racing calendar, rather than losing it in an endless procession of betting office bilge.
It is this sense of narrative that has been lost since the days I fell in love with the sport in the early 80’s.
February 24, 2010 at 22:27 #278925Champions League of Racing:
Six months, 32 horses, two divisions with promotion/relegation.
Televise the lot.
Or if I can be cheeky & suggest two…
alcohol free racedays
February 24, 2010 at 22:34 #278927Jockeys should be allowed to bet but have to do so via the Tote. The amount they’ve had on is revealed on the big screen five minutes before the race.

In the latest installment of ‘things that I’m not sure would work but would personally love to see,’ that gets my vote.
February 24, 2010 at 22:51 #278931Change to actual race planning structure meaning an overall better quality and prize system.
Some simple suggestions to making it possible –
Reduce to six races per card. This could make remaining races better quality/higher prize on offer and in some needed cases get the field size up.
Have one clearly superior race at each meeting, therefore giving the press and punters plenty to talk about, getting the sport more coverage.
If necessary to achieve an overall better standard drop the number of meetings.

5p in the £1 might wrest our sport from the control of the bookmakers, and what if some of it does finish in the pockets of ‘Arab Princes’?
Aren’t they the ones providing the sport for us to bet on in the first place?February 24, 2010 at 23:11 #278937I can’t believe anyone on here wants punters taxed. WE ARE punters and its hard enough as it is. The only decent thing Labour have ever done is abolish the betting tax.
Pick on the punters the little guys that keep the sport going.
