    Dahlia, Allez France, those were the days. I remember Dahlia winning George as a relative outsider. It was a much bigger race in those days, and was supposed to be a match between Roberto and Rheingold, but Dahlia annihilated them.

    Whilst it took place prior to any of our parents being born, I would nominate the 1902-1905 period that saw:

    Sceptre

    bravely trying to win all five classics;

    Rock Sand

    winning a triple crown (and finishing behind

    Ard Patrick

    and Sceptre in arguably the greatest ever renewal of the Eclipse in 1903);
    the legendary race and broodmare

    Pretty Polly

    winning the fillies’ triple crown in 1903 and retiring the winner of 22 out of 24 races before becoming the most successful broodmare of the 20th century;
    and Edmond Blanc’s French stars

    Ajax

    (remained unbeaten, counting the 1904 renewals of the Prix Du Jockey Club and Grand Prix De Paris amongst his spoils)and

    Val d’Or

    (won 7 out of 6 races including Grand Criterium, French 2,000 Guineas and Eclipse – had he contested the 1905 St Leger for which he was a very short priced favourite he would surely have won).

    All in an era when racehorses rarely shirked a challenge and wrapping them in cotton wool wasn’t an option.

    Our perception of the ‘Golden Era’ must naturally depend on our age grouping but for me the horses you quote will be with me forever along with, if i may add Diminuedo and Commanche Run.
    In that era trainers and jockeys never sprang out of nowhere unlike today when many a day i do not recognize them – good thing or bad thing, i am not sure but those 80’s were for me pure quality.
    On the jumps also we had Monica and Michael Dickinson clashing swords with best of the Irish each year – oh, great memories.
