Coincidentally, there’s an article about the gentrification of one of Goldfinger’s monstrosities in the Graun today:

Some say Margaret Nolan’s finest hour was her cat fight with Barbara Windsor at a beauty contest in one of the Carry On movies – I couldn’t possibly comment.

I read that article over breakfast, which made me think of this thread.

I must admit I do quite like Goldfinger’s Trellick Tower, at least to look at. Not sure I would actually want to live in it

Thanks Corky for jogging that back into the windmills. I think the relevance gives the filum more street cred. I am often in that golf course on wintry wet afternoons or walking the rail at the stud farm. The German villain reminded me of my grandfather and the way they dispatched the dissenter from the plans beat all the later gadgetry
I watched the film not long after it was released in September 1964 – I went with my mother and sister to the Streatham Odeon. We took the bus from South Norwood. I think it started at 7 pm.
I think all the old Moneypenny scenes were enrapturing and throwing his hat was Bond at his best.
I rarely watch em today because of the stair lift to heaven ads..

South Norwood? I lived there from 1997-2006.

    Small world.

Carry On Girls, set in the seaside town of Fircombe (ho ho)

    Dawn Brakes (Nolan)
    Hope Springs (Windsor)
    Sidney Fiddler (Sid James)
    Augusta Prodworthy (June Whitfield)

    Great stuff

Shirley Eaton of Goldfinger fame was in “Carry On Nurse”.

Those were the days to be unwell. ;-)

And who can forget Carry On’s greatest moment?

Is that the one that looms over the railway line just out of Paddington?

    Distinctive, I’ll give it that

I don’t like tower blocks and skyscrapers; I find them overpowering and unsettling

Beetham Tower in Manchester gives me the serious shudders, as it looks as though it would blow over in the gentlest of breezes

Yes, that’s the one. It is on the Golborne Road, just off Portobello Road in trendy Notting Hill.

You can get a very good view of it from the towpath of the Grand Union Canal, which is quite a nice walk down towards Little Venice.

The Beetham Tower is much too tall. It used to make an awful humming sound when it was windy but I think they may have fixed that problem now.

    “Carry On’s greatest moment”

That’s a big claim – there were so many to choose from!

    ” trendy Notting Hill ”

I just spied the Trellis from a back window not that I am always here – off tomorrow. The Hill had a bit more character before the urchins Left, at a time when the Portland road mob had the whole street to disgrace to themselves that was until the millionaires split it into two parts – it featured on the menace. Tarzan ran his run down B&B here, before he ventured into publishing, then his mane gave into politics, and he eventually got his puppet to do his work for him. Even the nuns round here were mean back then and if you’re mate’s dress sense let you down you marched him down to Dickie Dirt’s on Westbourne Grove for some docs and the cheapest Levi’s in town – long time replaced by several establishments – of late a Gourmet burger bar and recently a swanky japanese eaterie. The three parks have remained just the same though although they’ve changed the ducks a few times now !

Now South Norwood – that had some little hidden wonders none less than the Palace ground. :negative:

In fact, this is the Carry On team’s finest hour. A genuine comic masterpiece.

I really like the way all the diners continue as if nothing is happening but Peter Butterworth has something like a nervous breakdown, realising they are all mad.

The fakir inspired one of the classic Carry On lines earlier in the film, when Bernard Bresslaw dismissed him by saying “Fakir. Off!”

When I watched the film quite recently on one of the ITV channels, I was disappointed to see the line was edited out. Obviously considered unsuitable for a pre-watershed audience.

I’m a sucker for long-haired, exotic brunettes and so Elekra King (Sophie Marceau) and Fatima Blush (Barbara Carrera) are my favourite Bond girls
