Did anybody else watch the first two episodes of this new Danish detective serial?
It, runs for 20hrs with two episodes of an hour each on a Saturday night.
I certainly enjoyed the first two and imagine there are going to be a lot of "twists and turns" to keep the viewer entranced.
It is certainly the longest detective serial I can remember being 20 hrs long dedicated to one murder case.

January 26, 2011 at 23:35 #337845Missed it, but it’s had really good reviews so I’m going to catch up with it on iplayer [checked out the subtitles tonight and they’re ok]. Didn’t fancy trying to watch the first two episodes tonight on the telly. Since Wallander I feel I have to watch things with subtitles on Saturday night. Even bought ‘Jar City’ to watch, but fell asleep when it was on. The subtitles were difficult to read and I was too tired to concentrate.
January 26, 2011 at 23:52 #337847It’s on now, on BBC4 116. That’s Wednesday 26th, so I assume it’s on every Wednesday. Good stuff.
January 27, 2011 at 08:38 #337868Whenever I watch Scandinavian drama. I keep expecting the hero to sit down to a game of chess with the Grim Reaper in a clifftop castle overlooking the rainswept, thundery, North Sea. In fact, I get disappointed when it doesn’t happen.
Apocalyptic chess fantasies notwithstanding, I thoroughly enjoyed The Killing last night. Looking forward to next week already.
I owe you one, Matron.
February 13, 2011 at 13:06 #340442I am enjoying this, and I think the acting is superb, but am struggling to concentrate on 2 hours of subtitles [the 1 1/2 hours of Wallander was ok, as is watching a film at the cinema with subtitles; the cinema obviously being well before my bedtime]. I feel the need for a half hour coffee/toilet/leg stretch break in the middle. I know I could watch the second hour on Wednesdays, but I’m scared that I’ll forget and, once I’m in ‘the zone’ I don’t want to stop watching anyway. Also getting impatient to find out whodunnit, and I’ve got a long way to go! It reminds me of those Dickens books that were published on a weekly [?] basis with people rushing to buy the next chapter.
February 13, 2011 at 13:17 #340446I must admit I record it on a Saturday night and play it back; this allows me to "pause" if necessary!
It really is gripping because there are so many twists and turns in the plot to keep you engrossed.
Agree, the acting is superb and production values excellent as well.
Just watched last nights and can’t wait for the next instalments.

February 17, 2011 at 08:21 #340972I think it’s great that a subtitled series is being shown on British television, we should have more of this, it is not just films, but there are some great European series that we never get to see because they are not in English.
February 17, 2011 at 22:11 #341098The first subtitled series I can remember seeing on television was Heimat. Still one of the best series I’ve ever seen. My hearing isn’t as good as it used to be, and I’m actually starting to prefer subtitles [till my eyes go as well]. I’ve seen two films recently, The Social Network [Jesse Eisenberg; very fast]and True Grit[Jeff Bridges; very mumbled], where I’ve struggled to make out what is being said. Thank goodness for Colin Firth’s stammer in the King’s Speech; I understood that one!
February 18, 2011 at 07:10 #341124I remember this one from the 1980’s that BBC2 televised in instalments:-

"Das Boot", absolutely superb.

February 18, 2011 at 20:31 #341203Soren Sveistrup’s ‘The Killing’ is absolutley gripping. It is dark and moody reflecting the scandinavien winters. Lund’s character is torn between finding the killer and the promise of a new life with her boyfriend in Sweden.
The chemistry with Troels Hartmann is interesting as is her relationship with her replacement Jan Meyer. The plot moves at a fast pace ….. just when I think I know ‘who done’ then another spanner is thrown in the mix. I,m definately addicted to ‘The Killing’ and looking forward to the next showing.
February 19, 2011 at 23:27 #341383…..glad Lund found another sweater to wear in this episode; her wardrobe looks as exciting as mine.
February 21, 2011 at 17:47 #341602As good as
any
serial I’ve encountered in the last decade. Absolutely fantastic stuff.
A rare feat is achieved in that the subtitles are not obstructive: I haven’t been consciously aware of them at all.
February 21, 2011 at 20:02 #341623…"Das Boot", absolutely superb.
"auf die heimat":
February 22, 2011 at 09:50 #341668One, of the rare jolly moments on the "sub" Wit.
I hope it is repeated.

March 5, 2011 at 19:10 #343397BBC4 have confirmed the following:-
"BBC Four has bought the second series of Danish murder mystery drama The Killing, it has been announced.
The channel will air ten new episodes later this year, The Telegraph reports. The second series, starring Sofie Grabol as detective Sarah Lund, has already been shown in Denmark.
Richard Klein, the controller of BBC Four, said: "The Killing is the most intensely thrilling televison drama experience in British broadcasting of the moment and I’m delighted that series two will be on BBC Four. It is a diamond of a series – complex, dramatic, thoroughly gripping.
"It never loses sight of its truly brilliant insight: the humanity and the emotion that goes on behind a police investigation into a brutal and sordid murder. At its heart, this is The Killing’s genius – to truly portray the human cost of tragedy. And it is to the BBC’s acquisition department that real credit lies for the clever discretionary spot-and-pick-up of a gem of a series."
Sue Deeks, head of programme acquisition for the BBC, added: "BBC Four viewers have been utterly gripped by The Killing and we are delighted to announce that they will be able to enjoy the next compelling series later this year."
Something to look forward to in the autumn!

March 6, 2011 at 11:05 #343464We went to a play at the village hall last night; ok we were extremely tired having looked after the grandchildren for 2 weeks but, at the interval we left; if I’m honest I wanted to get home for 9 o’clock to see the next episode! Why are these series so good? I’ve never been into detective programmes, with the exception of Cracker. The actors are so real; the women aren’t botoxed etc but [and I’m only guessing here as a woman watching women] they seem to be attractive in a careworn sort of way.
March 18, 2011 at 13:32 #345996I started watching The Killing when I was disappointed not to find Wallander on (no, not the KBranagh version, thank you very much.)
Thinking, Well I’ve watched one Scandinavian sub-titled detective story & really enjoyed it – so, perhaps this will also be enjoyable.I sit there for 2 hours each Saturday: it’s terrific.
Just can’t work out the culprit, though!
