Desert quest arcalis and noble request wont like the expected rain, i dont think crow wood will be good enough, fassel doesnt seem to know how to win, the french furze is approaching 13, but will give his all, this only leaves straw bear(bar the 2 rags), whos trainer is in good form, and like soft ground.
does anyone have any alternative views?

I was really looking forward to Harchibald running in this, & imo he would have won it well. It’s a real disappointment he didn’t make it.

I haven’t warmed to Straw Bear yet, he has a lot of 1’s & 2’s to his name but imo he’s only performed to rating in the 140’s, I‘d be interested if anyone can explain why he has a rating of 154. I don’t think he’s proven at this level yet, & all the professional indicators suggest he is not the best horse in the race. So he either needs to have improved again over the summer, or as dave 22 says, get conditions that suit him & inconvenience the others. Which are possibilities.

I think there are enough other possibilities for him to be too short at 1.9/1. If Desert Quest is a non runner, the reduction factor will make SB almost an even money shot. I’ve laid him at this stage, I may back him back tomorrow if he’s bigger.

I really don’t fancy Desert Quest that much either, so I’m hoping either Noble Request or Arcalis will win this one, they both have the form to.

Mugged by Noland after an untidy jump in the Supreme, turned the Top Novice hurdle into a procession, and beaten only by Iktitaf at Punchestown when both the going and the steady pace were against him.
With the stiff track, soft ground, a decent pace likely, and AP up, there will much worse 9/4 shots, even with a possible rule4.

Im yet to be completely won over by Straw bear and on decent ground, i would readily oppose with desert quest.

On a line through the French Furze it would be difficult to argue that the winner has improved on his novice form. Obviously won with plenty in hand, but still has to show he’s a better horses this year than last.

I’d expect Noble Request and Detroit City to be closer on better ground.
Hope Pruf isn’t reading this, after the admonishments he had to hand out to those who assessed the Betfair Chase form on the premise L’Ami ran to his mark…

Probably worth making more of the fact that turning up in the same Graded race SEVEN years running, and invariably running a big race in it (2221353), makes The French Furze one of the most admirable hurdlers of his generation.

Is it really over nine years since he won his first race over hurdles at Tramore, with a young 7lb claimer called Paul Moloney on board?

Maybe TFF is better than ever at 13, but I can’t get the image of him being beaten around 20 lengths in last year’s Champion Hurdle out of my head.

I wouldn’t dare suggest he’s actually better than ever at 13, cos he ain’t, but the fact he still has something to offer at this level so far into his career is undeniably heartening.
