As Alan suggested earlier, these bets would most likely have been placed with bookies in South Asia, where bookmaking is illegal. I haven’t come across any such betting opportunities with bookies in the UK and I would imagine they aren’t allowed to offer them, given that the time and number of no-balls, like throw-ins in football, can be so easily manipulated.
It is a good question, why are the police investigating the potential defrauding of bookmakers who are based overseas and are themselves outside the law? I don’t know, but to the extent that it is adding extra heat to the issue, I am glad they are. Hopefully there will be tough action taken this time.
I strongly disagree about these police officers who are doing their investigation on bookmakers, well, unless bookmakers are doing things that are illegal and of course against law then I will support the post above me.

Was the chap receiving the wad in the NotW video British?
If so he is presumably guilty (if proven) of receiving the proceeds of a criminal activity, and being British and it taking place in Britain his actions have transgressed the law of the land; hence police involvement.
Two wrongs don’t make a right: robbing a thief is illegal, isn’t it?
As mentioned, given the significant Pakistani population in the UK it’s quite likely there’s a spidery underground network here whose web reaches deep into Asia
Incidentally, lest anyone hang, draw and quarter those implicated ‘with immediate effect’ it’s worth remembering it was the News of the Screws that provided ‘damning video evidence’ that snooker player John Higgins had taken a bribe, back in May. Apparently that evidence is looking ever-more shaky

August 31, 2010 at 12:48 #315252Has a crime actually taken place,if so i seriously doubt in this country.
The NOTW has paid a middle man (allegedly i suppose) to bribe some pakistani’s to bowl no balls at a pre-determined time. Doesn’t someone then have to gain financially through betting, legal or otherwise, for a crime to have occured? An analogy would be of me paying for insider info on a company but not benefitting through insider trading. If so it seems to me that this guy could get off scot free whilst the players careers are going to go up in smoke.
September 4, 2010 at 10:56 #315854Oddschecker has put up the prices now for top batsmen and leading wicket takers, only had a quick look but was slightly disappointed that Panesar was 9’s considering last season’s effort i thought at least a nice 16’s would be on offer. Never mind it was a nice idea.
Marcus Trescothick at 4’s could be an each/way bet to nothing.
Has Mark Ramprakash recovered from his injury at the end of last season? 7/1 could be quite big if he maintains his consistency and desire to score big or will he be stepping down the order?.
Update With 2 Championship games left these are the current scores.
Div 1 Runs
Lyth 1382
Hildreth 1309
Rudolph 1289Trescothick
1260
Adams 1194
McGrath 1174
Carberry 1142Div2 Runs
Ramprakash
1507
Rogers 1243
Peters 1205
Kervezee 1151Panesar has bowled well but 20 wickets behind the leader. His figures to date –
Overs 453.2
maidens 121
runs conc 1145
wickets 44
aver 26.02He missed a couple of games due to England Lions duty so could of had a few more.
I also fancied De Bruyn in the top Somerset runscorer market((should of gone for Hildreth )) just over 800 runs for De Bruyn his costing was not turning good scores into big ones as he’s without a century thus far.

September 7, 2010 at 15:54 #316321Nottingham look like making the championship a bit more interesting but I’m concerned about the weather forecast.

September 7, 2010 at 21:27 #316370Surely that’s a typo Nathan and should say…"Yorkshire could make the Championship interesting"?
Excellent day from us today and looking through the card and the runs that were scored, Gale’s ‘captain’s knock’ has to go down as one of the innings of the season so far!
Just hope for the weather to hold out for us now and hopefully finish the job off from the superb position we’ve managed to get ourselves in…
The last round of fixtures (weather permitting) look extremely kind to us too and I’d have to fancy our chances of claiming the title.
Promises to be an exciting climax to the season either way anyway.
September 8, 2010 at 11:06 #316431Yeah you’re quite right Zamorston about Yorkshire making it interesting and what a fine day they had. The reason I say/said Notts was because about a week or so ago they looked certain of winning the championship and I didn’t expect them to lose their game in hand against Durham then get bowled out for 59 yesterday.

September 8, 2010 at 18:05 #316528Ah yes, see where you’re coming from now mate…
Interesting fightback from Notts today, but at effectively 152-6 still got to strongly fancy our chances of seeing the job through with two days left.
September 8, 2010 at 18:29 #316541I would agree with that. I’m guessing by there not being a pitch inspection after 18 wickets fell on the 1st day is that the wicket isn’t too bad and Yorkshire made best use of winning the toss with the overcast conditions assisting the bowlers.
I hoping Somerset have a really good day tomorrow as although I’m no Michael Fish the weather report for Friday looks abysmal.

September 16, 2010 at 21:45 #317875In all the excitement of the past week I didn’t realise Worcester had got promoted. A fantastic achievement after losing so many key players at the start of the season. Andrew Hughes will be happy..
