Congratulations to Racing For Change on another superb “free” day at Nottingham races.
A beautiful, sunny day; racegoers three deep on paddockside, racehorses coats gleaming in the paddock – a refreshing change from the usual woolly, shivering, Levy boosters and dogmeat avoiders we see panting round the Sandpit.
Lottery style results of interest only to Trappist stable insiders failed to dampen the mood. Pineapple Pete and Mr Chocolate Drop inspired the biggest cheers of the day from “that’s a nice name” punters determined to have a good time.
Well done, R4C and Nottingham Racecourse. Great job.
However, you can tell the Summer Flat season is here. Leika and the Executive are already planning for Easter Saturday, the Kilvington Ladies Day, and those summer Saturday nights.
In the Pavilion building, behind the Grandstand, they’ve converted the defunct Tote Credit office in the left hand corner into a bar.
On the other side of the Tote office, next to the sweet shop, they’re about to convert a disused Tote space into another bar.
Behind the Pavilion is the Champagne Bar, and the Summer Bar underneath the paddockside hedges.
There is, of course, the revamped and redecorated Grandstand bar, plus three upstairs bars, two exclusively for corporates, members and premium entrance fee payers.
Inside the Grandstand, they’ve converted the old Owners and Trainers bar, on the walkway next to the Members into something called The Snug.
You guessed it – another bar.
There are going to be more bars at Nottingham races then there are in an El Paso jailhouse.
I asked a person connected to the racecourse why they didn’t just employ extra “Spacemen” on big days – the young agency workers with the Scuba tanks full of chilled p**swater popular at places like Bath and Thirsk – and leave things as they are.
He grinned and said they are doubling the Spacemen on big days, such as the Kilvington on May 7th and Easter Saturday. Thanks for asking, he said.
Last year, there was an amazing seventies style scrap between two inebriated and angry gangs outside the Members late on in the Kilvington Meeting/Ladies Day. If anyone saw “Awaydays” on Sunday night, you’d get a freeze frame of what went on. I knew two couples who frequent Southwell who will never, ever, go back to Nottingham after that. I’m sure they are not the only ones. My friend was genuinely terrified.
In their quest for profit – what the Yanks call Beer Dollars – by converting Nottingham Races into the Colwick Park Inn, are the executive compromising the safety of regular racegoers? It seems a shame, but at least we can deduce what the priorities are down there.

Having lived in Nottingham for four years as a student I can say with complete confidence that pursuing the ‘Beer Dollars’ is a very sound business strategy

Doesn’t sound a good place to go, at all.
April 7, 2011 at 11:33 #349024Not only did I not go, but to add insult to injury I was too busy studying the National to notice that the Betchworth Kid was running at Nottingham. Of course the old rogue finally gets to win at 8/1 without me backing him,on ground much firmer than I’d always been led to believe he liked, and in one of those typical Nottingham photo finishes where, not matter how much evidence they give you, you still can’t help but feel they got it wrong!
