I always used to look for an each way chance to take on the mullins shorties but I’ve stopped that altogether this year……..I know there’s no certainties in racing but there are four things we definitely know for certain in the run up to this festival…..
1. Mullins is the best trainer, period.
2. Mullins has the most powerful and wealthy owners
3. Mullins has the best jockeys on his horses
4. Mullins has the most expensive horses………. which in this case happens to translate to the best horses on all known form.WHy would you look for alternatives against him?
January 29, 2016 at 22:03 #1231147Hardy flyer.
Number 4 not true at all.
That’s doing harold kirk and pierre boullard a complete disservice.
They gave a great eye for potential in a horse and the vast majority of horses they buy from france were placed 3rd at best on debut before being purchased.Vautour 2nd behind black river who went to nicholls.
Douvan 2nd behind konix day who’s now with david pipe
Bellshill 2nd ptp behind mahler lad who went to mccain
Arctic fire purchased by pierre boullard for €110,000
Hurricane fly sourced from a french flat yard and purchased by harold kirk.
Un de sceaux bought for €60,000 by pierre boullard list goes on and on.
How many yards have bought point to point winners for over £200,000 and haven’t even won a novice hurdle.
Jonjo had 4 given to him last year.
It’s alright having the money but you need to spend it on the right horses and that’s the hardest job of allJanuary 29, 2016 at 22:19 #1231150I appreciate that TAPK…. reading back i’d probably phrase it differently but I wasn’t really giving the price as an reason for the superiority….more its just another fact backing the notion of Mullins in a different league. Also on the cost side i think you’ll agree while they have an eye for the best horses they do pay for them……The likes of Rich Ricci and co have paid a lot of money for some very average horses in their time also….even forking out 110k for a NH horse is big money…..Jonjo may have had four given to him last year but (and I’m open to correction on this because i don’t know) I would suspect Mullins probably has 5 – 10 of that sort of price given to him every year
The fact a horse like Konix beat Douvan also to me would not nessecarily mean Douvan was not clearly the horse with more potential….did he cost more or less than Konix?January 29, 2016 at 22:30 #1231151Rocky, not to mention Min at €6000
January 29, 2016 at 22:43 #1231156In today’s market €110,000 euro isn’t big money imo. You’ll be suprised if you look through the sales book from goffs or any other sales, just how much the point to point horses go for.
I think You’d be very suprised how much the mullins team spends compared to say nicholls, or jp.January 29, 2016 at 22:47 #1231157Min was €6,000 to guy petit the previous buyer, harold kirk and pierre boullard bought for rich ricci and spent a fee believed to be under €60,000. mullins also said min wasn’t an expensive purchase at all.
January 29, 2016 at 22:51 #1231160Is it confidential information or can this be accessed online?? I’d be interested to compare a few of the top stables…..
January 29, 2016 at 23:12 #1231164Accessible on line through all the sales books. Private sales are undisclosed unless the owner or bloodstock advisor quotes the fee.
Harold kirk in the uk (goffs etc..) and pb bloodstock in france (arqana) is the consigner for mullins and Anthony bromley normally buys for nicholls.
For private sales I use france galop.com and search the co signers that’s how I find mullins horses at start of season Inc min who i backed at 25/1. Although was still 50s at the time i found him but I wasn’t sure which was the one between min and townshend until I seen money was being matched on exchanges well below the books prices.January 29, 2016 at 23:32 #1231169Thanks Rocky……good information
January 30, 2016 at 15:10 #1231291I wonder if today’s goings on just bring people back down to earth a little and show everything isn’t a foregone conclusion just yet!
Three of Mullins real fancied ones before today now have question marks…
Shaneshill (JLT) was favourite a few weeks ago…beaten out of sight at Donny…
Up For Review (AB) second favourite and challenging for favouritism and beaten out of sight too…
Djakadam (Gold Cup) Not the best prep falling…
Add to that….
Bellshill (Neptune) pus his others were looking good but surely after today all they will be seeing is the backside of Yanworth!!

JLT – That was a step back in trip so I wouldn’t write him off yet for the JLT. However Mullins still has the impressive Killutagh vic for that race so I still think willie is sitting pretty.
AB – Up for review was a let down – Willie cant win them all!
Gold cup – Djak still a big player in the Gold cup. I personally think Vautour will win the Gold cup and he has Don Poli still too. A very very strong hand.
Neptune – Bellshill v yansworth is going to be one of the races of the festival. I cant wait
January 30, 2016 at 17:07 #1231314Yeah I’m a Vautour for the Gold Cup man meself…
Just think a little of what has happened today is a reminder that although Willie Mullins is a great trainer with a host of top quality horses, he isn’t invincible and good horses from other yards (like Yanworth today) will surface and become serious threats…

Fair comments Zam,I too was dissapointed with both Shaneshill and Up for Review like ‘King Sprinter’ says I too was surprised to see ‘Shaneshill’ drop back in trip but realistically he’s playing 2nd fiddle to Kilultagh King now anyway,he was never going the Arkle route so the JLT is still ‘Live’ for the 10 winners bet.As for ‘Up for Review’ he has next years 4 miler written all over him already but he is counted as a loser in the 10 winners bet, however Limini made up for that in Ireland, she has Mares Novice written all over her.I will still be amazed if Willie doesn’t get 10 winners cometh the day as its written in stone he has 5 on day one that leaves 2,2 and the Gold cup…..TAPK isn’t the legend of this forum for nothing you know.
February 7, 2016 at 12:45 #1232682“Anyone wanting a thrill for 4 days without having to endure the nightmare of which horse runs where in the world of Willie Mullins should take the Willie Mullins to have 10 winners or more at 5/2. At least that way we are cheering everything he runs”
That opening line hits home after yesterdays results at Leopardstown, those backing Willies horses for particular races Ante-Post will have burned their fingers already with the likes of Bellshill getting beaten by his stablemate in a Group 1.TAPK rates the Delloitte winner every year as Cheltenham banker material, this year anyone who beats Yanworth would have to be.
February 7, 2016 at 13:37 #1232689Mullins said Bellshill was amiss and he has no concerns about getting him better. It’s beginning to look very likely that there is something wrong in the yard. It’s affecting some horses but not others. But Willie is the most relaxed man I’ve seen given the circumstances
February 7, 2016 at 16:26 #1232706Strange that most of the below form runs have come from the Wylie horses – Nichols Canyon, Shaneshill, Up For Review and Bellshill.
February 7, 2016 at 18:45 #1232719Mullins horses seem to be so in and out for some reason, it must be a concern to them. All the value has gone so best to wait out and take the on the day gifts that the bookies offer to compete for your well earned
