How terrible, it sounds as if he was very young. May he rest in peace.

The Irish Independent has reported the victim is Henry De Bromhead’s son.

    What a terrible tragedy.

I hope the family can find solace in his passing in that he was doing something he loved.

Apologies to anyone in advance who thinks I’m a bit off with this observation, but there’s a lot of talk about wealth and privilege in racing which ignores the fact that so many of the protagonists routinely risk life and limb on a regular basis from an early age.

I’ve seen Olive Nicholls, 16yo daughter of Paul Nicholls and younger sister of Megan, take a succession of crunching falls in Point-to-Points in the past 12 months.

But she keeps getting up and getting on future mounts and Dad keeps coming up with rides for her to have.

How either of them cope with the stress of this I cannot even begin to imagine.

And though I’ve never seen a Pony race on a beach, I’ve seen children as young as nine on what are essentially racehorses that never grew big enough tearing round the outside of Point tracks many a time.

Incredibly dangerous, requires incredible courage to do it.

He sounded a lovely young man from what I’ve read about him in the last 24 hours and there are no words to describe how incalculably awful this is, for him and those close to him.

From kids to stable staff to jockeys, they are all putting themselves at risk of serious, life changing injury or death to sustain this wonderful sport.

For that they all deserve our thoughts at a time like this.

    Terrible news.

I can’t imagine what the poor lads family are going through, that’s something that lives with you for eternity, poor child was just doing something he loved and trying to achieve his dreams, noone deserves things like this. Life is so cruel.

First and foremost RIP Jack and my deepest condolences to the whole family especially his twin sister Mia who no doubt as a twin would have had a unique bond with her brother that only twins can share.

I think because we see so many rides day in day out without any incident, it takes something so desperately tragic like this to take us out of maybe some form of complacency that we have on jockey’s riding safety to remind us just how dangerous a sport it can be even if you are riding at the pony level.

It is still an extremely large mass of horse/pony flesh and bone moving at a high rate of speed where in a split second things (sometimes completely out of your or your mount’s control) can go wrong and put you in a situation which can easily turn into a tragedy if luck happens not to be on your side.

A bit of a tangent here but for me it brought starkly back into my mind the recent spate of careless/dangerous riding incidents where jockeys have done little to nothing to correct a wayward mount from crossing in front of other horses, which on another day could have quite easily had a much more deadlier outcome than a riding suspension.

(Apologies if that last bit is seen by anyone as not being appropriate to bring up on this thread)
