Although it took time for me to warm to it I now consider the a/w as part of my DNA when looking at horse racing as much a part as the turf season and find the prejudice ranged against it both ill conceived and downright unfair.Today sees the ‘highlight’ of the a/w season with their championship meeting at Newcastle, however I don’t like the fact that it’s been turned into a series of handicaps I suspect as with the switch to this venue it’s for quantity over quality. The horse I mentioned in my last posting was to have run in the Listed opener but alas has been declared a non runner.Having inspected the card PRYDWEN e/w does seem overpriced given his last run when registering career high numbers and the fact he’s relatively unexposed over this trip.Of the other races the sprint 4yo+ holds the most interest with Cover Up taking on the impressive lto winner Albasheer, with the Easter Classic probably holding the next best among the other contests.Hoping to have my first turf bet of the year tomorrow up at Musselburgh on what looks a competitive card.

    Edinburgh off!
Kinda scuppers my original plans however there’s one from Meydan I will put forward for your consideration in the Al Quoz Sprint where to my mind CALIFORNIA SPANGLE is a e/w bet to nothing @ 5/1 and likely to give the favourite the most to think about.Although this gelding has gone from the front when last seen in a sprint this time I believe Frost at Dawn will tow along the field and give him a nice lead into the business end of this contest.

I don’t back many of Willie Mullins horses but I do think JIMMY DU SEUIL in the Mersey Novices Hurdle has more than a fair chance of upsetting the favourite at a decent price.
Next week will see our first Newmarket meeting which for me always signals the start of serious betting with the run up to the Guineas before the big summer meetings get rolling and hopefully a fruitful year ahead.

Sadly I think that it’s time to drop the Fineform research experiment as a system. While it does point to horses with good chances there are too many ‘hitting the woodwork’ ie placed and not enough gaining the winners enclosure. However it’s not without it’s merits and adding the ‘human touch’ I know it’s workable owing to the fact I used it successfully for many years.I do have a horse for your consideration running today at the first Newmarket meeting of the turf season as following a pipe opener in which ISLE OF LISMORE e/w registered numbers up with his best he returns to a course which he’s run credibly at previously.I do believe at current odds he’s overpriced and have had a small investment each way.

Over the years have had a few nice returns investing on French raiders and although Andre Fabre may be in the twilight of his training career he’s still more than capable of sending over decent sorts to plunder these shores. The filly SUVIANA e/w to my eyes looks now to be running over her best trip following races over shorter and a mile. She’s only run once at todays distance and registered her best numbers to date without,in my opinion, the rider getting unduly serious on her final run last season. While assessing the form isn’t the easiest as this will be the filly’s handicap debut she doesn’t seem harshly treated. However she does look to me to be one of those horses that will be a specialists at this trip and think we will see some improvement.

Just a quick posting to put forward for your consideration THREE YORKSHIREMEN who makes a quick return under a penalty after demolishing his field last time out and think the gelding is worthy of a small investment.

While reaching a fair standard in Eire NAVAGIO e/w made an excellent stable debut after being acquired by new connections last autumn in the horses in training Tatts sales for what may prove a rather giveaway price of just 47,000 guineas. This gelding has spent most of his career being asked to race over an inadequate trip and although managed to lose his maiden tag over the 7f it has been the only success at the distance.Following a Gowran win over an extended 9f prior to his entering the sales ring a mile looks a minimum nowadays. After being off the course since late July his Doncaster run, registering near career high numbers, can’t have done anything but bring him on and hoping this improvement will propel the gelding into the winners enclosure or at least a place.
In the Abernant Stakes on Thursday was disappointed that connections haven’t learnt that Makarov is an out & out 5f sprinter for gods sake ALL her best numbers are at the trip how much sense does it take to realise this?

Apologies for last weekends selection who didn’t run to anywhere near my expectations but then again in this game many things happen which leave us scratching our head and mystified.Today pinning my colours to HOMBRE who had his first taste of turf racing on similar ground last time out and although the winning margin wasn’t big this grey gelding ran into all sorts of trouble. But once De Sousa extracted him he came home strongly for a first career win always looking likely to prevail in the run to the line having more in hand than the official distance would have you believe.

Just putting forward AL BAREZ for your consideration, after two good recent runs he’s thriving just now and numbers suggest this lightly raced 5yo with few miles on the clock has more to offer.

Going to take a bit of a risk today in putting forward JAMES’S DELIGHT e/w who to my mind looks overpriced given the balance of his form.Although this gelding cut no ice when last seen in the Greenham,7f looks too far at present, he’s must better judged on his seasonal debut in a class 3 handicap at Pontefract when quite simply scooting away from his rivals with the form being upheld since. The 3rd has won the 4th run well even the last placed horse won next time out.The double digit odds currently offered make the risk well worth taking for the selection to gain at least a place.
While watching yesterdays Newmarket card I was once again struck by the way race planning has gone to pot.Two Listed and a Group 2 amassed between them a total of 15 runners which to me is absurd. There are so many races like this now, especially Listed & Group 3’s,that winning one isn’t anything special and any connections looking for ‘black type’ can easily avoid a competitive contest opting for one which in my opinion is hardly worth the name given how weak some of these races have become. My plea is for more competitive handicaps they don’t have to be 20+ runners worth six figures going to the winner just something decent although I feel my cries will be lost in the wilderness as handicaps seem to be frowned upon in this age.

It’s been a while since I did a ‘feature piece’ here and think it’s time I said something about the use of and maybe why social media rules the roost as regard getting one’s opinion over to so many.Technology today can not only send things around the world in an instant but pass judgement on anyone who has the temerity to disagree with whatever passes at the time for accepted wisdom. In times gone by the ‘village idiot’ was a simple fellow, why always male, who was tolerated and allowed to go about his business.Nowadays the global village seems overflowing with them self assured righteous keyboard warriors intolerant of any dissent or alternative view.Opinions are plentiful and everyone has them however the equality, diversity & inclusion of the politically correct world we are currently in always make me smile about ‘inclusion’ as their method of excluding any person offering a different view seems counter to their stated aims of including everyone. The issue taking centre stage at present revolves around gender identity which is puzzling to me to say the least …..how do you have 73 or whatever the number is now genders? This is without the question of trans people even entering the fray and how the likely incoming Labour government will deal with it … recently a Labour spokeswoman declaring people can id as a llama..This is hardly surprising since Labour & Lib Dems supported the SNP gender identity bill in Scotland.
Although born & raised in a area that should make me a Labour supporter I lost faith in them a LOOOOOOOOOONNNGGGG time ago and their leaders have only got worse Blair a born liar,Gordon Brown destroyed the pension system in one swoop, although I am grateful he kept us out of the euro,Ed Miiband a grren zealot & idiot,Corbyn would have destroyed this country bankrupting it as Labour did in the seventies and now we have Starmer who flips on policies before they have become policies and like shadow chancellor Reeves much more left wing than either wants to admit to least they scare votors. The recent election of a Labour mayor for the West Midlands is in my opinion like turkeys voting for Christmas.
I seem to have strayed from my original text but will finish with a dire warning for all readers …. be careful what you wish for!

Although there’s been plenty of racing blessed by good weather nothing until today has met the standards I look for in possible investments.Today however there’s a couple of selections I’m putting forward for your consideration that I believe are worth small bets and have e/w chances. In the final two contests of the day first to go will be ZIP e/w and although getting on in years is still capable of maintaining a good level of form and looks in with a shout following a good second at Haydock last time in a better race than this. For a 4yo DARE TO HOPE e/w hasn’t got many miles on the clock but his win on seasonal debut at Beverley registered career high numbers for this gelding. After a very promising juvenile season although he did ok and maintained a decent level of form he didn’t quite kick on I think connections had hoped the following season. Now if his numbers are to be believed he’s ready to take the form to a new level and worth a try in this higher grade.

Thought Zip ran well at a much better than expected sp,Dare to Hope was slow out of the gates and just never featured.Paul Cole’s may not be the stable it once was but they can still turn out a winner or two and think they have a likely contender at Windsor this evening with the perhaps aptly named LEAP ABOARD e/w.This geldings recent success at Leicester has been boosted by the third that day winning since also he registered some of his best numbers which in my book makes him in with a each way chance.

You know the big summer meetings are soon going to coming around when York’s Dante signals Epsom isn’t far away. It’s up to the Ascot of the north we go today for FLASH BARDOT e/w a filly who’s form has been admirably consistent but recently taken to a new level after visiting the winners enclosure on three of her last four outings, the only blip on Lingfield’s polytrack in a Listed event.Although this contest will be harder than her recent win on seasonal debut, there the RP described the win as readily suggesting more to come.Held up in last made smooth progress to the leaders 2f out before going to the front passing the furlong pole and putting daylight between herself and the second who in turn was clear of the rest.Registering career high numbers at Doncaster it’s likely there’s more improvement to come and expecting her to build on that last success with the stable & rider doing ok at present.

Had today’s horse in mind all week and despite the drift I can’t see any reason to abandon top weight BLUE LEMONS e/w in today’s opener at Haydock. After winning on debut in what’s looking an above average Leicester novice event he went on to run third in the generally well regarded Haynes,Hanson & Clark novice contest losing out in a three way photo well clear of the others. The first two in that contest are now rated 108 and 106 respectively. The drop in trip on his final juvenile outing in the Horris Hill wasn’t to his benefit and showed when unable to match the pace of those ahead but was still only beaten a little over three lengths. The colt’s 20/1 sp on seasonal debut suggested he wasn’t ready for the Chelmsford race however ran much better when next seen at Sandown when splitting Hand of God and Royal Supremacy recording career high numbers and giving him every chance of being involved here.
