Lingfield is the place tugging at my senses today although my local track has a very attractive class 2 handicap with a fair field but for one reason or another it’s difficult to come down firmly on which will hold the balance of power in this event. However I’m quite happy to put forward for your consideration ROCKING ENDS who has done well on the a/w since returning from a three month break and looks to have the box seat with the draw enabling the rider to execute the manner of tactics chosen. With top weight Glorious Angel the most likely to lead the selection should get a good tow into the race.

As the selections I put forward for your consideration cover a number of factors to determine if a potential becomes an actual bet I’m looking at the idea of grading the horses here according to the number of positives in their favour. These include the numbers registered last time & how they compare with the horses career high.Whether they won last time out and if that race is their usual class they contest or easier/harder and the overall record of the selection. Then of course there are the imponderables to take into account, horses improving/declining,and if at this moment they are up to winning the race in question?
Although I do bet in condition races I prefer handicaps the higher class the better but very rarely wander down to class 5 and almost never class 6 but sellers & claiming races can at times offer an opportunity so a horses handicap mark will play an important role in deciding it’s chances of success or otherwise.More insight will be added as if and when considered necessary.
Today’s selection for your consideration is an improving sort but this will be his toughest task to date.Unraced as a juvenile SIR ROBIN made a most promising racecourse debut in a Catterick novice event filling the runners up spot over 7f.Dropped in trip he then won his next two outings a maiden back at Catterick following up in another novice at Doncaster both moderate contests.Put away after the second of these wins this gelding wasn’t seen again for six months when making his handicap debut at this venue early last month.Probably in need of the run he filled third spot in a class 4 contest racing from a mark of 87.Back on the track,Southwell this time,on the final day of January, dropped 2lb,dominated a class 3 race after taking up the running early and never in any real danger from that point.Sir Robin is looking at interesting horse to follow with only five career starts there’s every chance we could be seeing him on finals day at Easter and as he’s versatile it’s unlikely the best of him on turf has been seen.

A small investment today on a colt making his handicap debut off which looks like it may be understating his ability and prove lenient.MIDNIGHTATTHEOASIS was a very late foal so no surprise he didn’t make the track until the end of the year when without making much impression he was probably in need of the experience. From the widest of draws about a month later ran much better at Chelmsford filling up the runners up berth well clear of the third. This was put to good use 12 days later when comfortably winning a maiden over todays course & distance.

First of all may I suggest any betting on my selections be suspended for the time been until at least those put forward for consideration show some consistent winners.
However I shall still post for information purposes and all will still be counted in the stats appearing here for full disclosure.
Having a little e/w investment on OUZO over at Meydan this afternoon with this gelding being dropped in trip expect him to be ridden somewhat closer than his usual hogging the tail of the field.

Having no luck at all with Ouzo in the air,as the RP put it,getting a wide trip and running on late to just miss out on the extended place terms offered by many bookies.
Although Lingfield’s card offers some good fare couldn’t,for one reason or another, consider any made a betting proposition so going to a little fillies handicap at Chelmsford this evening where KENSINGTON AGENT is showing progressive form missing out on a three timer on her penultimate start when I believe she only lost out to a lightly raced and potentially smart a/w performer in Rogue Missile.

With Cheltenham here for me it signals the turf campaign isn’t far off and with it a plethora of top class racing alongside a multitude of betting opportunities. But until later this month we have to make do with the scant rations the all weather scene serves up.Today have come across a rather interesting Ruth Carr contender up at Newcastle who had his first attempt at the minimum trip last time. What makes BADRI so interesting to myself is how all the details have come together with his last run over course & distance one of his career best.Of this geldings 22 runs to date 16 have been on synthetic surfaces,a couple of places from 6 try’s on turf. However looking at his style of running I would argue that being held up suits as happened last time along with this tapeta surface.

At my local track we have KENSINGTON AGENT making a return to the blog who won for us just over a month ago at Chelmsford and to my mind looks capable of repeating the dose off just a 2lb higher mark and down in class.Since starting the year the filly has risen 10lb after 3 wins and a runners up spot and it doesn’t look like the handicapper has her measure just yet.Although at present it’s not cast in stone that her future will be confined to synthetic surfaces, she won at Bath during the summer of ’21.The selections two handicap runs on turf were over 7f & an extended 7f which look to be stretching her stamina beyond her best trip so I wouldn’t be writing this filly off as a turf prospect on the evidence to date given the progressive profile shown of late.
Having browsed through the cards for the coming week things certainly are looking up and of course Doncaster kicks off the turf season this side of the Irish sea the coming weekend.Although as usual the start of BST always knocks me out of kilter for several days and I’m still at a total loss to understand why this is continued with as all it does is artificially change the time of sun rises & sets the amount of daylight remains exactly the same.
Perhaps in the future wise heads will prevail and we will stop messing with the clocks, however I won’t be holding my breath in the meantime.

The now defunct Money Observer,a stand alone magazine, which dealt with matters primary of a financial nature always finished each monthly issue with a light hearted page called FunnyMoney.Although containing a serious if hidden message it very successfully brought together the various threads of any particular argument featured. With bookie checks on punters once more very much bubbling to the surface it brought to mind one that was entitled ‘Gambling breaks link of effort to rewards’ with the very basic premise that something unearned cannot satisfy the soul.
While machines & gaming that involves nothing more than chancing to luck have little to offer to the many who take investing here as a serious pastime or even occupation to my mind it’s totally unfair to those who are responsible in their financial affairs to be clubbed together with people who have little or no control over their emotions. However the virtuous,or those who consider themselves to be,among the liberal elite and general do-gooders seek to tarnish all with the same brush relying on generalisations and any poor unfortunate who happens to hit the headlines,As occurred today with William Hill being fined over a punter(s) who were allowed to lose a large amount of money in a short time.I don’t consider bookmakers as ‘the enemy’ as some say merely as middlemen for it’s a basic rule that for the few to win more have to lose and it’s an accepted thing … you pays your money and takes your chance.
I don’t have any magic bullet how you fix the problem of addiction in investing on horses, dogs, slot machines or casinos but what I can say from my time working at the Citizens Advice Bureau is simply that until the individual themselves recognize the problem there’s little or no chance of finding a solution.

After a winter that seems to have gone on far longer than it had any right to we finally emerge today with the traditional start of the turf season at Doncaster and although not a big fan of the race putting forward for your consideration a each way selection for the Lincoln.Although three horses make it through the initial qualifying filter none of them make it all the way so Atrium,Croupier & Majestic are assessed on their individual merits as I see them.MAJESTIC E/W makes it to the top of the pile for me after being one of the last if not the last horse off the bridal in last season’s Cambridgeshire and making ground hand over fist to win with something up his sleeve. As a five year old this gelding can’t be said to having had a conventional start to his career which commenced in a NH bumper at Kempton as a 4yo.Wind surgery followed before steady progress up the handicap ladder culminating in the above mentioned win which took the selections form to a new level registering career high numbers.Raised 7lb for his success it still leaves him on a very workable mark in my opinion. However the underfoot conditions are somewhat of an unknown as with others and in such circumstances I defer to the handlers judgement.Having invested at long odds each way providing he handles the ground I will be a bit disappointed if we miss out on the extended places offered.

Nice of the bookmakers to enhance yesterday’s selection and send him off at 25/1,giving a nice start to the season although missing out on the big money for winning.
A bit unusual with my betting but I’m putting forward horses on consecutive days which is something rare for me except for the really big meetings.A horse with a single win from twenty odd outings doesn’t seem an attractive buy however his present handler went to 45,000 guineas to secure BLIND BEGGAR e/w last autumn. The selection has already started to pay his way winning two of his three races this year with the gelding found to be coughing after a beaten favourite on the second occasion. However he will encounter completely different conditions this afternoon from those since coming over from Eire but judging on his run at Naas in October they should hold no fears where he registered good numbers and I consider the gelding overpriced at the double digit odds on offer and a good each way bet to nothing with extended place terms.

Apologies as I don’t have time for a proper write up of the selections being put forward for your consideration I shall just inform yourselves of my deliberations and as always allow the individual to make their choice.
In the opening Listed contest the Charlie Hills trained GALERON e/w took his form to a higher level stepped up in trip over at the Curragh with the 4th winning a fillies Listed event on her following outing so think this colt has potential to step up again over a mile.Later on the Newcastle card I find it hard to look beyond MANAAFITH in the fillies & mares having done everything asked of her since returning to the a/w.

Although Galeron ran very much as expected I thought this mile trip looks like it being a minimum and perhaps 10f will be needed by midsummer but I believe he still holds a Guineas entry at present. My other selection Manaafith was a big disappointment with the media saying this was her final run before retiring to the paddocks, more on this filly and my betting latter.Going north of the border for a gelding that in my opinion needs both at least this distance along with the necessary cut in the ground. For your consideration may I put forward EMIYN e/w who to my mind put up a terrific performance in last season’s November Handicap over an inadequate 12f.Having run well over 16f and beyond it’s strange to find he’s never tried this intermediate distance which looks ideal for a starting point aiming maybe for Chester a course suited to his style of running and where he’s run well in the past. The generally on offer of 8/1 looks fair and I’m hopeful of at least claiming some place money.
One of the big questions all punters grapple with is the idea of value in so much as prices taken about a particular selection and what it’s attempting to undertake.Through the years I’ve invested on horses at all prices from very long, had the winner of the Ayr Gold Cup @ 33/1 not too many years ago to backing Istabraq at odds on.With the nagging question always being should there be a minimum price rule in place? However this now brings up a reasonable argument if one horse might be considered too short a price why can’t others be too long as following results it’s easy to see that the number of double digit winners is few in comparison to those that feature in the first few in the betting forecast. For myself I resolved this issue in the main by asking if the selection I’m about to invest my money on …. ‘ In my opinion does the price being offered reflect the horses chances of winning or gaining a place in this particular race based on previous & current form?’
One of the issues which is always hardest to judge I find many punters totally ignore is what the Americans would call the ‘class factor’.With it being so late think I better post this and return to the subject another day.

The more laws and restrictions there are,
    The poorer people become ……
    The more rules and regulations,
    The more thieves and robbers.

    Therefore the sage says:
I take no action and people are reformed.
I enjoy peace and people become honest.
I do nothing and people become rich.
I have no desires and people return to the good and simple life.

At last the turf season really kicks into gear with the Craven meeting at racing headquarters but for me it’s to Kempton for a filly who’s put all her best performances over tonight’s course and distance.Although up in class the selection being put forward for your consideration took her form beyond anything achieved previously last time out and because not well drawn having a small each way investment on FULL PRIME e/w to continue the progress.

Foaled very late it’s no great shakes that PURPLE MARTINI e/w didn’t cut much ice as a juvenile or that considering her dam stayed middle distances that she was tried over 8f toward the end of the year. However on returning to the track it’s evident that she takes after her sire Mayson not only in trip but maybe too in liking some cut in underfoot conditions.Although no world beater on strengthening up looks like progressing beyond her lowly starting point.
