Cousin Vinny was entitled to win well today but you’d have to love the way he quickened when young Mullins gave him a shake of the reins. He’s going to take all the beating in the Supreme if he stays sound. The acceleration he possesses is phenomenal and he has jumped very well on both his hurdling starts. It could well be make or break for a lot of punters in the very first race come March time!
December 27, 2008 at 05:28 #199436I’d wait and see what his stablemate does tomorrow, before jumping to too many conclusions about the Supreme Novices, IC.
December 27, 2008 at 05:30 #199437Think we’ll be seeing Hurricane Fly in the Ballymore no matter what he does tomorrow Grass. Willie looks to have some set of novices this season though.
December 27, 2008 at 05:42 #199441You might be right, IC, but Cousin Vinny won a maiden today, and it’s Hurricane Fly that goes for the Grade 1 on Saturday. I don’t think it’s all that clear-cut myself.
Besides, WPM has Mickael De Haugenot (sp?) for the Ballymore, doesn’t he?
December 27, 2008 at 05:48 #199442To be honest I actually see Hurricane Fly as being more of a supreme Novice type than a Ballymore horse, for some reason (despite being by montjeu) he actually is irregularly speedy. It wouldnt be unlike mullins to leave us to decide where he is going to go, as he did with fiveforthree last season, but I expect the supreme novice is where HF will end up..
December 27, 2008 at 05:55 #199443That Mikael D’Haguenet looked seriously good at Navan but he’s a huge horse and Willie said after the race he’d be unsure that he’d come down the hill well or whether he’d handle quicker ground. Reading between the lines I reckon he’s unlikely to go to the festival.
Hurricane Fly is a horse that seriously impressed at Punchestown last May and he’s been going the right way ever since. I got a few quid on him for the Ballymore after he ran in France last summer so I’m keeping the fingers crossed he goes that route.
He might have beaten Cousin Vinny in the Royal Bond, but the betting told everyone that day that Hurricane Fly was a lot more forward and he also had the edge on experience. In hindsight, for Cousin Vinny to be only beaten less than 3L giving him 3lbs on his first run over hurdles was a great run. If they were to meet again off level weights now I would expect Cousin Vinny to come out on top.
They are both in different ownerships though so Willie might not be able to keep them apart come the festival but I’m sure it’s a nice problem for him to have.
December 27, 2008 at 19:45 #199553Mullins is off his head if he doesn’t let Hurricane Fly run in the Supreme – has the absolute perfect blend of speed and stamina for the race.
December 27, 2008 at 19:48 #199554I honestly don’t think there’s a better hurdler in Ireland than Hurricane Fly – his perfect blend of speed and stamina was on show there and is one of the reasons he managed to win in France (where they regularly need a turn of foot at the end of a race). Think he’s a banker wherever he runs (Supreme Novices or Ballymore).
You don’t fancy going halves on that Supreme bet do you Grassy?

No chance, Irish.
December 27, 2008 at 20:10 #199567Was planning on getting a bit of the 12-1 on Hurricane Fly before he ran today and forgot all about it, d’oh. I think your on a stonking good bet there grassy, the best contender I’ve seen for this by a distance, as everything stands.
December 28, 2008 at 02:39 #199680Grassy,
I believe! What a fantastic performance, quickened after travelling so well through the race, can’t see him going for anything other than the Supreme.

December 28, 2008 at 03:08 #199686Terrific performance from an incredibly promising horse. Young Townend oozed confidence even though Slippers looked to have plenty of horse under him. The acceleration he showed after the last was breathtaking.
Willie was very coy about his future plans after the race but I just have an inkling he’ll end up in the Ballymore. He’s won over two and a half on heavy ground so stamina won’t be an issue even if he is a very speedy horse. It will be very interesting to see if he runs against Cousin Vinny in the Deloitte pre Cheltenham in order to determine what races they’ll go for at the festival.
There were a few whispers doing the rounds today that they might be tempted to run Hurricane Fly in the Champion Hurdle
. I reckon its very unlikely but he would not look out of place.December 28, 2008 at 03:34 #199694Very good horse by the looks of it, very nice turn of foot too and has the ability to just leave his rivals in his wake.
A very cool and confident ride from Paul Towend too, knew exactly what he had underneath him, knew exactly when to kick on, and when he did, his horse responded in great fashion.
It will be interesting to see if Cousin Vinny lines up in the race too.
December 29, 2008 at 04:46 #200056What about a Champion Hurdle entry for Hurricane Fly?
Wouldn’t be the wildest idea given the stable portfolio and only Binocular looks a solid CH horse at present.December 29, 2008 at 15:05 #200126The Supreme Novices is the only one I´ve not backed him for at the moment.
Would think he´ll at least get an entry Shaby – not the wildest idea in the world going for it. IMO he´s the best hurdler in training (bar none) – his turn of foot is amazing and think if he´ll at least win the Champion Hurdle in 2010.

Much as I am a supporter of Hurricane Fly, Martin, there isn’t any evidence which suggests that the horse is the best hurdler in training.
Hasn’t stopped me having some cover in the Champion Hurdle, mind

I had a vision Grassy – I think provided he can go the gallop he has a superior turn of foot to anything we´ve seen this year or in the few years previous. There´s no evidence as such as he´s not taken any of them on – there´s no strict formlines to go on but his performances against arguably the best that Ireland has to offer at the moment would certainly warrant consideration of a tilt at the big one.
That said I´d prefer a bash at the Ballymore and then the Prix La Barka
