I have read several threads on here about commentators but can’t remember anything being written about Machin. Not sure of the general accuracy of his commentaries but he must possess the most monotonous drone in the sport. It’s even worse than Simon Dow sounding like Trevor Brooking. You would have thought ‘voice’ would have been pretty high on the attributes required for the job but somehow he has crept through the net. Unfortunately, Racing UK compound the situation by using him as one of their third division presenters.
April 18, 2008 at 19:18 #158580Think your being very harsh there stilvi. Does his job very well. How we speak is how we speak.
April 18, 2008 at 20:22 #158596Machin is one of the better callers. Just a few annoying catch phrases to be kicked out of him. Shot-to-bits, shadow of the post…
April 18, 2008 at 20:30 #158600He always comes to our Cheltenham preview evening with Lydia and he’s great fun.
April 18, 2008 at 22:30 #158617Has he upset you in some way?
Agree with Cav, that’s a bit harsh Stilvie – he is one of the better callers on the circuit, technically very good.
I also think he is one of the better presenters on RUK.
Then again we all have different preferences.
As you placed a question mark after the thread title I will answer it … NO.
Worse examples – Doug Fraser, Des Scahill and Tony O’Heir to name but three and there of plenty of historic examples.
April 19, 2008 at 00:50 #158624Like Machin but agree that the ‘Shot to bits’ line is utter cack, particularly when he is using it in the wrong context.
Seems a good guy otherwise, and I like him as an interviewer.
April 19, 2008 at 06:08 #158626Another word of support for Stewart Machin from me.
His commentaries always seem pretty accurate and compared with GG and Mark Johnson (sp?) his "shot to bits" doesn’t even register.

April 19, 2008 at 07:00 #158635Seems strange to me to criticise a commentator when you know little about his accuracy, in fact he is very accurate apart from his aboration on Derby Day last year when clearly his mind was at Epsom. He sounds fine, anyone who can remember an old chaser of Tim Forster’s called Master Spy is okay with me, thought I was the only one Wish he would ditch his stats though
April 19, 2008 at 07:27 #158637I quite like him as a commentator, does his job well.
"Got these shot to bits".
April 19, 2008 at 19:49 #158785IMHO Machin does a pretty good job as a commentator and makes a
reasonable all rounder too.I would concede that his vocal timbre is not a favourite of mine and his
vocals seem to get too tight in a finish, few complaints on the content
of his calls though.April 19, 2008 at 21:33 #158814I don’t mind him either, he does a much better job than the idiot at Cheltenham….MC.
April 19, 2008 at 21:37 #158816Would prefer his quietly accurate style to someone who managed to fall and resurrect two leading fancies in the National.
April 19, 2008 at 21:41 #158817MC also called a faller at Cheltenham this week inaccurately. His words " oh we have lost one there " was actually a previous faller who had got rid of his jockey and fell again"
April 19, 2008 at 22:59 #158827I do think Stewart is a very accuract caller and has done some of the toughher races in his time such as Ayr Gold Cups,Cambridgshires,Cesarewitches and even a John Smiths Cup aswell as Scottish Nationals and races over the big fences at Aintree.
I have seen him a lot at meetings i go to but have never said hello or anything but he does seem to be a genuinely enthusiastic racing fan and turns his hand to anything wether it be caller, host or judge on a racecourse.
April 20, 2008 at 09:37 #158858While i agree Mr Machin’s voice is pretty lifeless there is only one contender for dullest voice and that Graham Goode.
April 20, 2008 at 16:33 #158909Stewart’s absolutely fine for me, and his interest in the sport covers all bases, even as far as a few point-to-point stints each year. He gave the job as much seriousness, inclusive of doing of homework beforehand, when he called at the Fernie meeting at Dingley that I was working at last May.
A proper pro.
