What a brilliantly opportunistic ride from Timmy Murphy to steal the last at Ascot today. He must have stolen at least 15 lengths at the start, and then kept just enough up his sleeve to repel allcomers on a horse that was all out. Wonderful !
Anyone else care to share their favourite rides to steal racesNovember 20, 2010 at 22:22 #328952Totally agree Coggy, it was an inspired ride by Timmy Murphy and wasn’t surprised that Matt Chapman was drooling over it on ATR. Could be one of the rides of the season, and I’m not saying that just because I backed the winner!

As a formerly decent bumper/hurdler who had only one way of running it was surprising that he was allowed get well over a furlong clear by halfway. As he was coming up the hill to turn into the home straight the other horses were just leaving the back straight. The final furlong seemed to take forever, maybe because I was at the track and had backed him at long odds, but he had enough in the tank to win easily. I’ve seen quite a few of those in bumper races over here where there can be next to no pace early on, there was one just last week at Punchestown where Exit To Anywhere got a distance clear in the Bumper and held on to win by 3l, but Kahuna’s win is my favourite.

So why say you backed the winner? If nobody knows, nobody can judge.
An opportunistic ride indeed, but rather clumsy of the remainder to let him get so far ahead.

I would have thought stupid was more appropriate than clumsy although it is probably worth watching the start again to see if the starter was also at fault. The key was gaining a useful lead with minimum effort – Murphy hardly had to do a great deal to achieve this so any ideas of it being ride of the season apppear slightly wide of the mark.
