So many things to bet on nowadays and maybe it’s just not seen as fashionable to bet on horse racing outside the Derby and the national. My friends used to pester me for a tip for the national but don’t mention it now. Remember how popular wrestling used to be then gradually faded out the mind of viewers. It’s a slow decline for racing but when the likes of amo are splashing millions on mares not surprising that there is no groundswell of support for racing.
It’s just the folk brought up on dessie, shergar etc who seem to care. IMHO of course.

I had the same experience (yet worse) as Green and Nathan on Monday!

According to oddschecker, laddys were best priced about a treble I wanted to place.

    Gaboriot (Beecher)
James Du Berlais (December gold cup)
    Monbeg genius (Welsh national)

But they only had a price for Monbeg genius. I was absolutely staggered that 5 days and just under a fortnight they weren’t pricing up 2 large field Saturday handicaps. At premier meetings. Surely this is something that needs addressing by the BHA. This can’t be helping with turnover!

    Hi Chaps,

I’m a long time reader but first time poster on this forum, so go easy on me. Like many of you I’ve had my accounts restricted or closed by the bookmakers. With the liquidity on Betfair poor up until 10 minutes before the off, I’ve become frustrated as the horses I look for, which are generally in handicaps, are considerably shorter by this time, which in turn is making it increasingly hard to turn profit. Could anyone recommend an independent bookmaker that is willing to lay a bet and won’t close my account within a few weeks of dealing with them? Thanks

It is disappointing but not totally surprising.

Early in the week, I wonder how much antepost money there is for races at the weekend? I doubt it is very much. I expect better prices and each way terms are available on the day.

That is no excuse for poor service but unfortunately a lot of shop staff do not have much interest in racing. I am not particularly surprised he had not heard of the Tingle Creek.

Remember when Barney Curley almost pulled off the coup with four horses. It involved dozens of people placing Lucky 15s and Yankees around London betting shops at about the same time.

Curley knew most betting shop staff would not recognise the bet involved four horses connected to him because they had no interest in racing. In fact, he advised the people he hired to put on the bets to try to be served by female cashiers whenever possible because he thought male staff were more likely to spot the link to him (although it sounds like he would have been safe with the cashier who served Green).

I dare say some people will find that sexist but Curley was a hard faced operator who relied on meticulous planning. He wouldn’t have issued that instruction just for the sake of it.

You might just as well ask for help with a search for the Holy Grail.

Early prices are there to provide the bookies with cheap info, not for us to make profits by getting on at prices that prove to be too generous. Beat them once may be OK, beat them twice and you’ll be restricted or blocked. It’s not personal, it’s just an efficient algorithm.

Three choices – accept the reality and bet near the off – go racing and bet on course – pack up betting.

The first means the discipline of not betting at less than a value price. The second is OK and larger stakes can be accomodated, but it’s not an option for a race at Ascot if you live in Scotland. The third is the route many are taking, as the headlines in the Post confirm.

Thanks for your reply AP. I was hoping someone would recommend an old school independent that was happy to lay a bet. I go racing when the opportunity allows, I use Betfair regularly too, it’s just frustrating backing horses at much shorter prices than they were advertised at in the morning.

    Big success for Premierisation today!

Two meetings off, leaving Wetherby starting at 10:35 in order to finish before the 2pm Premier deadline – but the last four races at Wetherby still overlap the first four at Sandown.

ITV had the the CEO of the Jockey Club (Nevin Truesdale) on the Opening Show this morning to talk about the drop in online betting turnover of 3 billion. A couple of his ideas to alleviate this, were to promote bet builder bets and the other was to expand Racing IQ Data etc.

This comes a few weeks after his solution to small fields was to get more owners into the sport.

What hope is there when people like this are running the sport?

I have just received an email from Plumpton about the meeting next Monday.

    It promises:

“Mulled wine and mince pies to warm you up.

Festive outfits (you might even win a prize from our festive elves!)

    An action-packed racecard.

Fun for all ages – perfect for family and friends with discounts available for groups of 6+*. Plus under 18’s race free!

A mini market for all your last minute shopping.

The first 500 through the gate on the 16th will receive a free Christmas hat to really get into the festive spirit.”

Nice to see the racing got third billing! ;-)

I’ve just checked the attendance on the HBLB website for Kelso’s Christmas Holiday meeting of December 29th and it was 4,821. That’s the biggest attendance for a meeting I’ve attended at the track in 17 years of regular visiting, 10 years of those as a member. No fancy tricks to get people in, just a decent track putting on good horse racing.
