Sadly, I suspect that’s the last we’ll see of Sprinter Sacre. I hope he’s ok. I think there is another good season in Sire De Grugy. Not sure I want to see old Sizing Europe struggling round in any more top races though. If there is anyone who has earned an honourable retirement, it’s him.

Sprinter Sacre is believed to be suffering from something internal. Come on Nicky, you have completely forgotten how to train a chaser. Let the horse retire in one piece!

I agree retirement is probably the best way to go with Sprinter Sacre, but all depends on diagnosis. Nicky will no doubt make a decision once more is known about the situation.

Sire De Grugy suffers from corns and refused permission to run in the plastic shoes so successful at Chepstow. Not sure why you think SDG should be retired?

Isnt this the forum for intelligent discussion??

Why would you retire Sire de Grugy?
Emotion is pointless and has no place in training. Bring Sprinter Sacre home and if a very obvious reason comes to light ie infection, wrong blood count etc, than you deal with it. If its his heart and or breathing, probably time to retire.

Well maybe retirement could be a bit premature regarding SDG. But I hate to see a former Champion Chase winner running for minor place money against younger and faster horses. Probably a step up in trip could be worth a try. As far as Sprinter Sacre is concerned, please let me know what the next experiments are. Apparently MILKSHAKES are a good drink.

They will retire Sprinter Sacre. It’s just that they won’t announce it today as it’s not sporting to take the limelight away from the winner. I felt that SdG was really feeling his feet today.

I don’t think it was the greatest renewal of the race and although old Somersby has run well again, he’s no spring chicken and representative of the changing of the guard situation we have in this division in my opinion.

I think they owe it to Sprinter Scare to retire the horse instead of farting around with diagnoses and medical procedures ad nauseam.

The horse came into this race with Barry Geraghty declaring that he felt the horse was right back to as good as he was when he came and won. The horse clearly isn’t the same as he was and has earned the right to a bit of dignity instead of trotting out all these excuses about medical ailments. He’s a horse, not a Formula 1 car that you can tinker with from season to season. Poor show if they don’t show respect to the once peerless Chaser.

Sire De Grugy was disappointing. The ground was faster but I am not convinced he’s still got it. You can argue the merits of the Chepstow race all you want but he was a no-bet for me today. I haven’t been a fan of the way this horse was prepped, either in terms of where he went, or the lack of information there was regarding the corns/plastic shoes/shoeing procedure, which only came to light after his two runs back. Retirement may be a bit harsh but I can’t have him for this race next year and I’m doubtful I’ll be interested in him full stop next season.

Un De Sceaux is the one for me next year. I think he could be seriously better than the rest in 2016.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Never let the heart rule your head when betting on horses.

I did say that Sprinter Sacre ( ” they don’t come back ” ) was the lay of the meeting ,
and even warned Ginge about his over enthusiastic view
of Sire De Grugy following that horse’s workmanlike
performance ( as I saw it ) prior to Cheltenham .

I heard Paul Nicholls also say as much in his post race interview
and reckoned Dodging Bullets should have been favourite –
with only sentiment placing the two ex-champions above his horse in the betting.

They have to retire Sprinter surely?
It is such a shame to see such a wondrous horse labouring like he did today . He didnt jump great and never looked to be tanking along like he used to. I am sure Nicky will retire him and hopefully we can all remember how good he was.

I did back SS mainly on Geraghty’s word that he was back to himself. Knew from early doors it wasn’t to be as his jumping just wasn’t the SS of 2 years ago. There didn’t seem to be that spring there. Hopefully they will retire him now.

SDG deserves another chance, whether 2 miles or longer, as long as the feet heal.

At the time of that “over enthusiastic view” H, I did not know about the corns or plastic shoes used at Chepstow. As intimated in my reply to Joe (Steeplechasing) – It is one thing running in plastic shoes on very soft ground at Chepstow, quite another on good ground today. AND the fact he ws not allowed those plastic shoes, presumably had the same plates as Newbury. Given that information not a surprise SDG did not give his running and had I backed the horse on the day not knowing about the Authorities refusing plastic shoes – I’d be livid. There’s also a possibility the race came too soon, just 18 days since Chepstow. Form which – had he repeated – may well have been good enough to win.

Tbh Nicholls is always confident and optimistic, it’s hardly surprising felt DB had the best chance. If you look back I did say (as far as their chance goes) there’s nothing between the top 3 in the betting. I was “enthusiastic” about SDG’s chance considering his then price, not today’s price. :good:

I had Dodging Bullets as best value in the race and main bet. ;-)

Yes , you did Ginge – that fact I will concede.

We are very much on common ground about the potential winner of the Gold Cup :

Silvianaco Conti is a worthy favourite – he has by far the best form in the race .

    Still gutted.

But i’ll never forget the two years of sheer joy he gave me. I have my arkle and punchestown memories from being there as well as the other great performances on the telly – champion chase and Aintree.

The signed photo from Nicky and Barry of Sprinter and my mounted picture will proudly display in my new home when I move in in a few months.

I don’t see any way back for him after today, never jumped or travelled with any fluency. Something is still amiss with him and there no point forcing it. retirement prob beckons and as they said on channel 4 today is unfortunately true for my boy – ‘The flame that burns Twice as bright burns half as long.’ But by God he was great to watch for that time.

It’s great to have such wonderful memories of a great horse in your life. For me it was Dessie and the years when I used to met him at Ab Kettleby as part of his fan club. My signed drawing of Des is just behind me [need Simon Sherwoods signature to complete it though].I was really worried for SS today and I’m just relieved that he PU’d in one piece.
