There is a fair bit in truth but let me just highlight one thing :

Start of Newmarkets Craven meeting tomorrow, so thought I’d check on the going. According to Michael Prosser it is

“Following 3.4mm of rain on Monday the ground is good, but riding just on the slow side

    Arrrrghhhh!!

What the hell does that mean? Is it good or good to soft (as the "slow side" of good would indicate).

Either its good or its good to soft – which one??

Can’t it be between Good and Good-soft Flash?

If it is only just Good ground, not far off good-soft, then surely it is best for them to say so.

Each going description falls between two values on the going stick, so if the reading is at the lower end of the range then it surely has to be described as being on the slow side of (insert going)?

A liquid with a pH of 5 isn’t labelled as corrosively acidic as it is approaching neutral (7-8), but it is acidic nonetheless…

Yes if they invent a Good – good – soft going description.

The times will no doubt indicate either Good or good to soft. If its on the "soft side of good" then give the description as good to soft.

I realise its maybe not issue of the month but it just bugs me.

The going will 90% of the time be softer or firmer than good, but if it is nearer good than anything else it should be called good. The clerk is doing punters a favour by saying it is on the soft side of good. If I work a horse out as liking a sound surface (good or firmer), I may think twice about backing it on Good (on the soft side). Where as going described as on the firm side of good would be ideal.

So difficult to assess the ground at the moment because lots of really sunny spells over the last few days and then we have a sharp shower.

I was with Michael when he gave that going report and he was genuinely trying to assess what it currently is and what he thinks it may be.

It has been dry most of today though and it seemed to be to be quite warm for this time of year. The forecast is for more of the same.

Grass has been growing really well this year and Newmarket was cut earlier than ever before.
