Thoughts on this?
I don’t really see the point of changing things. If you raise it to 21, those who are underage will have no issue getting hold of fags. Perhaps the idea is to make it less likely they’ll start.
As for banning it altogether in some form, dream on. That’s a gift to to the black market. Plus you’ll still be treating smoking related illness but receive no tax revenue. A ban would need global co-operation which has a roughly zero chance of happening. Maybe the graduated ban in New Zealand will work but they are miles away from anything, smuggling is harder.
I don’t smoke for the record.
June 8, 2022 at 20:17 #1601303I don’t smoke either and, even outdoors, I cannot bear to be around anyone who is smoking to the extent that I walk away if I see anyone doing it.
So I’m biased, very biased.
But trying to be objective, I think that smokers….should be shot dead….on sight.
That brief flirtation with objectivity could have ended better, I suppose.

OUTSTANDING “Yes, Prime Minister” clip from CAS – still laughing now.

Back to this proposal though. Won’t it make it aspirational for some ?
June 9, 2022 at 18:56 #1601400I haven’t smoked since I was a little boy. On the buses, in restaurants, even in hospitals.
I’m like Ian, I avoid it like the plague, even those vape things are awful.
Smokers are the most selfish breed of any addicts in my opinion. You could be hanging off a cliff and holding on for dear life. A smoker would need to light up first before coming to the rescue.Gaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026

Would you then rather be rescued by someone with two bottles of vodka in them, a smackhead or even worse given the circumstances, someone tripping out on lsd? “You can fly!!!”
I’ll take the smoker
June 10, 2022 at 06:20 #1601448Cars emit far more polluting rubbish than cigarettes.
Can we ban them as well?
June 10, 2022 at 09:07 #1601453We are banning polluting cars.
Value Is EverythingJune 10, 2022 at 09:32 #1601454Never taken a drag in my life and like Ian and Nathan I tend to avoid those that do; although cigar smoke is a little better. One of my racing pals smoked them occasionally but he was very courteous, only smoking outdoors and when there was plenty of room to move around. Officially banned but…worst thing about going racing was at a big meeting in the grandstand someone stands right next to you and decides to light up just before the off. So crowded it’s impossible to move away! I know it’s supposedly their nerves – waiting to see the race but !!!! Some can’t realise how pungent it is otherwise they’d have more thought for other people. Not only bad right then and there but could smell the smoke on my clothes all the way home in the car!
Whether a progressive ban will work? Not sure. The reasons for one are all well and good, but in 15 years time how can it be ok for a 34 year old to smoke but illegal for a 33 year old?

The social stigma of smoking is gradually increasing and from what I hear fewer kids are smoking now anyway – presumably because fewer of their parents are smoking.
Value Is EverythingJune 10, 2022 at 09:37 #1601455No such thing as a car that doesn’t pollute. Electric cars still have tyres and brakes. The air pollution is moved to wherever the electricity is generated, far from all of which is renewable. Best not to mention the mining of the metals for the batteries. It’s a step in the right direction but nothing more. It’s not the fault of any one country or government, it needs joined up thinking.
Brilliant clip posted above, and probably not far off the discussions that have happened privately.

Time will tell with New Zealand I suppose. But as I said they are isolated. We have dozens of neighbouring countries that tobacco can easily be bought or smuggled from unless they all do the same.

Which is exactly my point Richard.
Electric cars are better than petrol or diesel and with carbon guzzling power stations being replaced and future advances in battery technology things will only get less and less polluting.Value Is EverythingJune 10, 2022 at 09:48 #1601459Good point about NZ being isolated, Richard.
Value Is EverythingJune 10, 2022 at 09:51 #1601461It’s good to move the pollution away from densely populated areas for sure. Next step get rid. Necessity is the mother of invention as they say so hopefully it holds true for power generation and battery technology. We’re supposed to be saving the planet so by definition it’s a global issue. More accurately we’re saving ourselves, the planet will be just fine.
June 10, 2022 at 10:02 #1601463Personally not 100% convinced global warming is all about man’s actions; but I guess that’s for another thread.
