My wife & I were chuckling at there being six vehicles following them around at Ffos Las tonight & we were trying to work out what they’re all for.
We decided on a vet, doctor & the ambulance but we couldn’t get our heads around a second ambulance for a four runner race & the other two cars.
Anyone?
Back to the racing, a really good ride from Denis O Regan on No Panic in the 8.45. Very impressed with that.
Also, in the midst of the BBC’s shocking Oaks coverage (a second complaint to the Beeb & probably OfCom next, they’ve got BBC3 & BBC4 dead all day after all), there were two hours of racing on Sky Sports 4. They’ve got their own dedicated channel & yet they’re putting racing on their sports channel too. But the BBC can’t spare enough resources to show two sports at once!
June 7, 2011 at 21:35 #359461You have got me there considering it was a 4 runner race!
I just got home and watched the racing at Ffos Las. Had a nice couple winners with No Panic and Tiger Jacey especially the latter at 33/1!
Im pleased for Denis that he is getting more rides for southern trainers since the split with Howard Johnson. He now rides pretty much all of Victor Dartnall’s and Peter Bowen is using him more – hopefully that will continue after the ride on No Panic. Very underated jockey in my humble opinion.
Hope you enjoyed the racing, Ive never been to Ffos Las – would you recommend it?

It looks like a nice course though.

It’s just rules of racing Anthony.
For all jumps meetings at least three ambulances – or at least it used to be three – have to be on duty with two of those ambulances being classed as ‘frontline’ – meaning they go round following the runners in every race, regardless of whether there are four runners, 44 runners, or just two runners.
Imagine a two runner race; one horse falls in the home straight, jockey seriously injured needing urgent medical attention, and the other horse falling in the back straight, jockey needing medical attention.
Given the example above – albeit an example that rarely happens for real – it’s very simple to understand why two ambulances follow all races at jump meetings.
As for the other two cars I haven’t got a clue. I’m almost certain that stewards sometimes go round in a car, and I don’t think it’s against the rules that connections of a runner aren’t allowed to go round in a car. So perhaps one had stewards in, the other had a trainer in. Complete stab in the dark though mate.
June 7, 2011 at 22:17 #359470Interesting.
We thought one of the cars might have ground staff in it in case one of the runners kicked lumps out of a fence.
Having said that, there weren’t three cars for all the races, your trainer theory sounds probable.
It’s quite a carbon footprint that racing leaves, all things considered.

Unless you happen to live in the area it is an absolute bugger to get to but I think it is very much worth the journey.
It has one of the best racing surfaces in the country and it is in decent setting.
If interested here is my review of the course

June 8, 2011 at 11:15 #359540Not sure about the specifics of Ffos Las but ususally the vehicles following are Doctor, Vet, Ambulance & Groundsman.
Often, the Starters’ vehicle will end up following the rest of the convoy back to the stands so that may well have been the 5th car you spotted.
We tend to have 2 Groundsmen’s vehicles covering half the course each as well which adds an extra one.

It is an exceptional course, quality conditions and a great surface. Voda phone has a poor service there but orange is fine.
Just travel down the M4 till you see the Llanelli sign and follow the signs to Llanelli and then to the races. In my experience the Satnav after Llanelli is useless . Follow the map and the signs. 3.5 hours from London.
Glorious at this time of year particularly ,situated right on the estuary. Try the Welsh salt marsh lamb chops in the restaurant. Plenty of good hotels nearby.
And I`m glad you approved of Denis`s ride.June 8, 2011 at 16:03 #359596Hope you enjoyed the racing, Ive never been to Ffos Las – would you recommend it?
Without reservation – fabulous course, and long may it prosper.

June 8, 2011 at 17:41 #359617Thank you all for the info on Ffos Las. Im in Exeter so would be around a 3 hour drive for me i would imagine?
It sounds great from the reviews wo will consider going one day.
Just out of interest has anybody ever been to my local track? We do get a good class of horse and Haldon Gold Cup day is brilliant!

Haldon Gold Cup day is certainly a busy one but I have to admit it is not one of my favourite courses. Viewing is not particularly good on the best of days, on the not infrequent misty days it is nigh on impossible.
It is a course which arguably punches above its weight in terms of the quality of racing.
June 8, 2011 at 18:56 #359627Fair play on the fog it can be a nightmare. I suppose you just build up a fondness of your local track, I have been going there for so many years.
All the local trainers love sending their first time chasers and decent types to the track which is great.
June 8, 2011 at 19:35 #359633Had several runners and a couple of winners at Haldon. Good old West country course.Fog is a problem
