10 Summit Surge (IRE) 6/G L1* K Fallon 126 L M CumaniRahystrada, Just as Well, Tajaaweed, and Marsh Side finished 1-2-3-4 in the Arlington Handicap last month. General Quarters was 6th, his trainer said that GQ hated the track and that he wouldn’t run him in the Million, so it’s odd to see him here. Quite a Handful set a new track record at 1 1/16 in an allowance at Indiana Downs (definitely not a top-tier track!) last out, and he’s the “local” Midwest horse, but he’s facing a big class test. Not sure what to make of the three Europeans in the field. What do you all think?
August 19, 2010 at 14:17 #313601I agree with you about Paddy O’Prado and Wigmore Hall in the Secretariat. Wigmore Hall looked to be a fast improving horse in his last race. He could improve again to give PO’P a tough race.
Rainbow View looks to be a class above the others in the Beverly D, if she has finally acclimatized back to USA conditions after three years in The UK.
Gio Ponti has the Arlington Million at his mercy if he is on good form. Tazeez will be the best of the Europeans, beaten just over a length by Byword and Twice Over in a Group 1 at Royal Ascot, with those two going on to be second and third in the International at York. That’s top class form at 10 furlongs. Tazeez’s most recent run can be ignored, it was his first at 12 furlongs and he didn’t stay the trip.
August 19, 2010 at 22:44 #313685Rainbow View is out of the Beverly D with a tendon injury, Marsh Side will run in the Sky Classic at Woodbine on Sunday, Two Notch Road came down with a fever and wasn’t shipped over from Monmouth.

August 21, 2010 at 19:29 #314084Never done this before.
One can watch the Arlington Million, etc here. Seems to be a camera aimed at a screen with the piccies.
August 21, 2010 at 21:44 #314106Haha. Thanks Gerald…not great but better than nothing
August 21, 2010 at 22:50 #314119Paddy O’Prado is a FREAK. People were kind of worried that Wigmore Hall was able to get so close to him, but I think that speaks more to the quality of Wigmore Hall fresh off the plane.
Fantastic day for William Buick, 3rd on Gypsy’s Warning in the Bev D and then upsets in the Arlington Million. And of course Tazeez did well by finishing 3rd. Gio Ponti is not as good as last year, but he’s clearly better than every other older American turf horse, at least at this point in the year.
I’m also very happy with Blind Luck’s win in the Alabama, she’s shaping up to be a fantastic filly, should give Rachel Alexandra some work to do in the Beldame.
August 22, 2010 at 02:38 #314134See Debussy win with so much in hand it’s ridiculous.

I know the Gosden string are in fine fettle, but he’s simply hammered them here. If the best turf horse in the US can be man-handled like that by a group 2 horse, at best, then there really is nothing of note running on grass over the pond right now.

Jamie Spencer hardly covers himself in glory here.
Falls asleep three out before the turn, giving up the rail to Deans Kitten. Before he knows it, he’s being asked to challenge four wide on the bend. Race over.

No, the best horse running on grass here is Paddy O’Prado. Anyway, all the other G1 older turf horses ran in the Sword Dancer last week.

Spencer (for once) not to blame on Wigmore Hall – a favourite of mine since I picked him out as "the new Teleprompter" in his Newmarket maiden. Slow early pace did for him, but he was tailing the right horse (Paddy O’Prado) and accelerated at the same rate – never made up the ground because the winner was in front, not because he gave him first run. Wigmore Hall isn’t the easiest to ride, as he has one burst and needs to come as late as possible, but Spencer wasn’t in a position to ride the race any other way today. With a good pace he’d beat today’s winner any time.
Debussy’s win was quite extraordinary – and Buick had luck on his side (easy to say "brilliant ride" when the horse wins, but he got into all sorts of trouble when Hills went for home on Tazeez in the back straight.) Looked booked for 7th at best on the turn in, but Gio Ponti had done his running hard on the outside to take command and had nothing left to counter Debussy’s late surge – I suppose Gio Ponti’s jockey reckoned he had so much in hand over the rest that he could afford the wide tactic, but this time he got mugged on the line for an unlikely defeat. Thrilling race!
Debussy is a Group 1 horse when the cards fall his way, as he looked at Chester in May and proved today.
Fallon not at his best on poor Pachattack. Hopeless start, but still gave up the outside to nothing, even when 2 lengths in arrears of everything; and still plenty of juice left when never nearer 6th at finish. Should have been placed.
August 22, 2010 at 10:30 #314174McGrath (on ATR’s Sunday forum) pointed out that the international handicappers now have a bit of a problem with Debussy.
I think they’ll capitulate to the US boys, over-rate Debussy and protect the rating of Gio Ponti and, cosequently, Zenytaa.
What should be Debussy’s rating in relation to, say, Rip Van Winkle?
August 22, 2010 at 12:20 #314192Paddy O’Prado looked good but not overly impressive, imo.
Debussy wins the Million.
Well, it has been a week when a 100/1 shot won a group 1 in the UK.

Pinz, if you see the route Deans Kitten took – the one Jamie would and have taken up the rail 99/100 here in England – there’s only one winner here, for me. To say the horse has to be ridden like this is the sort of excuse I’d expect his agent to come up with! His job was to give the horse the best chance of winning, and a school boy error cost him the race IMO.
Do you think Jamie would do the exact same given the chance?
If his job was to tail Paddy o’ Prado all the way home then he succeeded.

Congrats to the Gosden team and Buick for a fine ride. I think Debussy could win a Gr1 in Europe but the going would have to be perfect for him on the day. Thankfully the heavens opened for him yesterday and the jar went out of the track. He loses lengths on anything good or firmer.
