With the addition of country suffixes there have been more instances of horses with the same name. I am not sure what the gap between a racehorse dying and the name being up for grabs again (unless it is on the protected list), I think it used to be 8 years but I seem to recognize names on a more frequent basis.

In terms of general nomenclature, it seems that Coolmore are trying to prove that good names do not necessarily make good racehorses or vice versa. Some years ago their naming policy was a delight but the single syllable efforts of this season have left a lot to be desired. It is as though they have been using a random word generator or perhaps even the text from a book.

Derby Winners are interesting in their naming, St and Sir were always popular and I must confess I backed Sir Percy for the race as much as anything because his name was fitting to be inscribed on the roll of honour. Blue is notoriously bad luck for horses in the Derby after the gypsy curse of the 19th century, although the curse was broken when Blue Gown won in 1868 it is not really a good idea to use the word Blue for a possible Derby prospect. Red is the colour for the Grand National.

Naming is also important when considering the Stallion prospects, Galileo and Sea the Stars sound good and lend themselves to well-named offspring. Authorized and Workforce do not.

His original owner must have been psychic Drone, Ogden didn’t buy the horse till he had run 19 times

Oh dear  As I’m nearly old enough, I’ll put that mistake down to having a ‘senior moment’

    Thanks for the correction

The opposite extreme would be Claiborne Farm, which likes to give most of their horses short, succinct names.
Sometimes they are good, sometimes they are just reaching for random words.

the single syllable efforts of this season have left a lot to be desired

    ‘Wrote’ being a notable example.

But ‘Camelot’ has a ring to it, and plenty scope for yearling buyers (and for Coolmore themselves) in the naming of his offspring. (Not to mention the headline writers next season.)

I meant the monosyballic names were poor rather than the abilities of the almost lazily named animals. Wrote and Was are particularly bad examples as they are past participles. Unless they are trying to set up an Abbott and Costello type sketch I can find little merit in the process.

Indeed Camelot and Crusade both have potential for their possible progeny.

As this thread has wandered off a little I will include something not quite so, but related.
If anyone hasn’t already seen it on Youtube, the American race between ‘The Wife Know’s Everything’ and ‘The Wife Doesn’t Know’ was a classic not to be missed….

…to continue, while I expect Cheltenham welcomes overseas contenders with open arms, there is one up and coming from Australia that it perhaps would rather be despatched somewhere else…. like Japan for instance – I’m sure they won’t mind, but Champion Hurdler ‘Black and Bent’ has been strongly mooted as a contender next March.

An alternative talking point to controversies over the whip, I should expect.

The ‘Muk’ horses were quite unpleasant sounding..Mukadamah springs to mind [although there was an explanantion for their names] but the Twiston Davies ‘Muck’ horses were quite delightful. I agree about See More Business even though he is one of my favourite all time horses; loved the name See More Indians who I assume he replaced.

Thewifedoesntknow is still racing at Monmouth Park.

Other favorite racecalls involved Ohnoitsmymothernlaw, Doremifasolatido, and of course Arrrrrr. Tom Durkin has also had fun with New York stalwart Stud Muffin.

One of the best trotters of all time was http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deweycheatumnhowe , named for the fictional law firm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dewey,_Cheatem_%26_Howe. His name actually contributed to his recognition outside of harness racing. Another star of the crop of 2005 was the pacer http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Somebeachsomewhere
