AIDAN O’BRIEN has been dealt another blow with the news Scorpion could miss the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday week (November 6).
The three-time Group 1 winner pulled up lame after a track gallop and is rated a doubtful starter for theworld’s richest handicap at Flemington.
Scorpion was put through his paces with stablemate Mahler over 7f at Sandown racecourse on Monday morning but was found to be sore after the work-out.
The son of Montjeu, whose big-race triumphs include the2005 St Leger and this season’s Coronation Cup, is as low as 11-1 to win the Melbourne Cup off top weight – but his participation is now in jeopardy.
James Bester, spokesman for Coolmore supremo John Magnier, said tests would be done on Monday evening, with the results to be known on Tuesday morning.
"Tom Magnier (of Coolmore) has spoken to Aidan O’Brien, who is in Los Angeles and informed him of Scorpion’s problems," said Bester."Scorpion is showing signs of lameness and Aidan has ordered X-rays be taken of the horse this evening.
"We do not expect the results until tomorrow morning.
"Aidan was specific that he wanted to let the racing and betting public know that Scorpion has suffered a setback.
"Aidan admitted there is now a possibility that Scorpion might not run in the Melbourne Cup," Bester told the Daily Telegraph in Australia.
Scorpion’s setback exacerbates a wretched few days for O’Brien, whose Breeders’ Cup dreams ended in despair after George Washington was humanely destroyed after the 5million Classic on Saturday.

"The X-rays don’t show any bone damage (off hind) so it’s probably a ligament or a muscle injury," Aidan O’Brien said.
"But it’s serious enough to keep him from exercising for a few days, which puts him out of the Cup."October 31, 2007 at 10:58 #122413retired
October 31, 2007 at 11:05 #122414bloody Ballydoyle, O’Brien gets it all wrong again, flying him down to Melbourne for nothing…..
October 31, 2007 at 11:12 #122418I just hope that Mahler A) gets round in one piece and B) wins!

He could do with a change of luck, couldn’t he?
Can’t see Mahler giving to him, though. The MC is a brute of a race and I cannot see him being "man" enough for it.October 31, 2007 at 11:58 #122424No, he probably isn’t. He’s racing under conditions for a 4Y0 when he’s only 3 so it will be tough. But I do hope he runs a good race, whatever anyone thinks I think Ballydolyle deserves a run of luck.

Hear, hear to that
October 31, 2007 at 12:26 #122431Good to see him retire in one piece anyway, a horse that, from the first moment I set eyes on him took my breath away…beautiful…
October 31, 2007 at 20:04 #122512for the best, always liked him, some beast of a horse, the size of him!
