in these days of British jobs for British workers, I assume he’ll be the only one available to ride Denman.

If Sam Thomas has re-gained his confidence and self belief, then I for one would have no qualms about him riding Denman in the Gold Cup. He seems to get on very well with the big fella. Whether he will or not is up to Messrs Nicholls, Barber and Findlay.

I’d say the concept of being British is up to the individual. You’d have to ask him.

A P McCoy is a British citizen having been raised in Northern Ireland. In fact, I think he has the OBE doesn’t he. He cannot get that if he is from the Republic of Ireland, so there will be no Sir Ruby Walsh.

I think Northern irish people have dual nationality passports, so he could just as easily claim to be Irish.

presumably he doesn’t object to his Wikipedia entry:-

"Anthony Peter "A.P." McCoy MBE (born 4 May 1974, Moneyglass, County Antrim, Northern Ireland) is an

    Irish

horse racing jockey, and is widely regarded as the greatest jump jockey ever".

..best taken with a pinch of salt….if you can find any.

Why do we keep having multiple threads about the same thing- it’s so untidy!

Perhaps we should open the Sam Thomas wing of TRF.

Bob Geldof (among others) has a knighthood and he is from the Republic of Ireland.

I have checked Wikipedia and it states that

"Knights and Dames Grand Cross and Knights and Dames Commander who are not citizens of Commonwealth realms are not entitled to the prefix "Sir" or "Dame", but may still use the post-nominal abbreviations. Geldof is entitled to use the post-nominal letters "KBE", but as he is not a citizen of a Commonwealth realm, he is precluded from using the title "Sir". Regardless, the nickname ‘Sir Bob’ has stuck, and media reports will frequently (but erroneously) refer to him as ‘Sir Bob Geldof’ as if that were his correct title."

So you are correct in your assertion that there will be no Sir Ruby Walsh.
