    Farewell Sam.

A man who turned a gaff track into one of the most go ahead courses in the country. Prize money, facilities and attendances are vastly greater than they were when he took over, the ground conditions are widely praised and Perth is a course that all the jocks and trainers are happy to come to.

But more importantly Sam made racing fun and every racegoer at Perth was made to feel welcome. I’ll never forget the interviews in the winners enclosure, the spraying of champagne on various occasions and the general sense that life was there to enjoy.

He wasn’t a bad jockey either.

    Gone much too soon.

Above all , apparently a really nice person.
Traditional style, but good , jockey , but also an innovative style clerk.
Condolences to all he was close to , a true loss to the sport as well.
His time as a jockey reminds me of a golden era of Rimmels , Walwyns and Winters.
    R.I.P.

He was on a night BetVictor sponsored before the OPen Meeting in 2016 and had some of the funniest stories I’ve ever heard. Incredibly warm, friendly and charming man. RIP.

He was a pretty good jockey, mostly riding as understudy for the Rimell’s winning the Queen Mum on Another Dolly when Chinrullah was stood down but he was probably even more distinguished in his great efforts in raising the status of Perth from a gaff track to a prestigious venue for Scottish Racing. An MBE was deservedly awarded to Sam for his innovation and hard work.

    RIP Sam.
