Sizing John out here and in the Gold Cup?
February 12, 2017 at 16:42 #1287109Definitely
February 12, 2017 at 17:18 #1287114More importantly however Road to Riches is entered in the Irish Hennessy, which is superb news as I’ve got him at very big prices for this. We really need to see some kind of spark from him. A top 3 finish would be superb.
That was a nice run from RTR. Hopefully they’ll put him in the Ryanair again.
A nice run, i.e. he just about got round to finish last? Horse has no chance in this year’s Ryanair if you ask me, this is a better race than when finishing3rd last year.
February 12, 2017 at 17:20 #1287115Bad decision if they do but they’ll be tempted by the holy grail. He aint beating Thistlecrack and Native River unless they both fall.
He could beat UDS over 2 1/2 at Cheltenham but he won’t win a Gold Cup. Empire Of Dirt was closing again at the line, Don Poli was there…they are’t Gold Cup horses. They dawdled through parts of that first circuit slower than the novices in the Flogas.

Off a bit of a break he set a decent pace (ran in front of Don Poli most of the way), went well, jumped well and was still in with a shout 2 out, 3L behind turning for home (3 1/2f out) and was then given an easy time of things. I’d say that’s every reason to be optimistic, especially given the performances he’s put in this year.
Btw, I’m not saying he’ll win, I just want him to run!
February 12, 2017 at 19:22 #1287128Fair enough – he could be one for the National come April anyway, always thought that after his run in the Gold Cup a few years ago. Gigginstown have quite a strong hand in the entries already but he sticks out at 50/1 to me.
February 12, 2017 at 19:27 #1287129Have to agree with MarkTT. It was a great performance today from Sizing John but the Ryanair is the right race for him regardless.
Probably a quicker pace early on, a further 2fs and up hill finish in March will add up to only one thing: SJ getting out-stayed.
The proximity of Don Poli and EofD at the end doesn’t bode well from a gold cup point of view.
If you think 12/1 is a good price for SJ in the gold cup then 66s about More of That is massive.
Going to be hard for connections not to be tempted now but really do hope they go Ryanair.February 12, 2017 at 20:11 #1287138I’d find it quite surprising if SJ doesn’t go to the Gold Cup after that. Looks like he’d at least be competitive in the GC and that’s the premier jumps race of the season – with way more prestige and prize money than the Ryanair. He’d be far from a banker in the Ryanair anyway.
February 12, 2017 at 20:56 #1287145Agree that he’ll prob go Gold Cup now, just don’t think he can win it on that showing today, as good as it was for him to win that race in its own right.
Imperial Commander took in the Ryanair before going for the GC the following year and no reason why SJ should be any different.
At this point in time the Ryanair would be the better race for him.
However, given that Fox Norton for the same connections could step up after his defeat by Altior, I can’t see him staying Ryanair.
Take your point Gun about the prestige of GC though but any winner at the Festival isn’t to be sniffed at and u have to give yourself the best chance.February 12, 2017 at 23:37 #1287165If sizing john goes for the Ryanair after beating established 3 miles chasers, horses rated in the 160’s, over 3 miles on heavy ground in leopardstown instead of going the gold cup route, then it is a perfect example of why the Ryanair needs to be removed from the Cheltenham programme.
February 13, 2017 at 00:11 #1287170Yeah, if you owned him you’d have to give it a shot I guess, can’t dispute that.
He won’t stay though, will he?February 13, 2017 at 00:27 #1287171That just ignores some relevant factors.
It was a slowy run affair won by the horse with the quickest turn of foot. He beat Don Poli by 1 1/2 lengths ( Don Poli beaten 14 lengths in last years Gold Cup ) and Empire Of Dirt ( only previous win over 3 miles was in the Troytown which is rarely a strong race ).
If he goes to the Ryanair over a distance that’s guaranteed to suit, there’s probably just UDS in his way.
If he goes to the Gold Cup over a distance that’s not yet guaranteed to suit, there are a few horses in his wayThe easier option for Sizing John ( and a very good prize in it’s own right ) is the Ryanair Chase.

Uxizandre cannot be ignored
February 13, 2017 at 09:01 #1287186It probably isn’t going to happen but I don’t think Sizing John would confirm the form with Empire Of Dirt in either a Ryanair or Gold Cup. They have both come to the last on the bridle and Empire Of Dirt has lost at least two lengths through no fault of his own. He is probably up to 165 now and a faster pace and better ground are likely to bring out even more improvement. He should be favourite for the Ryanair.
February 13, 2017 at 14:27 #1287204This is turning into a very competitive race. There might not be many 170+ horses in here, but we’re getting a hell of a lot of 160+ animals turning up here and it’s going to be a great spectacle.

I don’t think the Gold Cup is any different. The Timeform top three were Thistlecrack 175 Djakadam 174 Cue Card 173. Unless Cue Card suddenly bounces back I wouldn’t be confident that any of those three were going to run within 10lbs of those ratings. In reality I think there are plenty of horses in the 160-166 bracket and it is pretty obvious you want to be with something that is likely to improve a few pounds.
Personally, I think Altior is the only horse in training that actually deserves a very big rating.
