    Taken the 33s Uxizandre.

Still a bit left after being Pricewise’d but potentially shocking renewal. Kingy says back in work and goes to Doncaster next week.

‘Shocking renewal’ it is most definitely not.

“Is there added pressure on the yard now that Cue Card is Gold Cup bound? I’d argue that from a trainer’s point of view, the more good horses you have in the race, the more chance you have of winning it. So it possibly eases the pressure a little bit. It’s a bit like playing poker – the more aces you have, the better chance you have of winning the hand. And Colin Tizzard holds most of the aces in the pack now.

But I’ll still be hoping to gate-crash the party on Djakadam.”

So, no Djakadam in the Ryanair probably.

I would have to agree, it has quickly become one of the best races of The Festival and this years renewal looks as intriguing and competitive as error.

I don’t think it takes too much away from The Gold Cup at all, though I am aware of that suggestion. It might take the odd runner away from the queen mother, but that race has never had the allure or big fields as enjoyed by The Gold Cup. Definitely one of the success stories of the 4 day festival for me.

As for this years race, I am hoping for a return to form for Black Hercules, though that return to form would have to be dramatic, and he has been a disappointment this season. I would like to think I’ll see a different horse in March and I like the 16-1 with William Hill.

Clues on offer this afternoon at Thurles. If Sub Lieutenant can justify favouritism and defeat Black Hercules and Sizing John I don’t think 14/1 will be as freely available for Cheltenham. I expect a victory today but that’s assuming Black Hercules continues his poor run of form.

Nice performance by Sizing John there. Prob an underrated horse because Douvan kept beating him. But Douvan is a very special horse even if some don’t want to give him credit either.

Only watched the Thurles finish once but it seemed an unusual capitulation by Sub Lieutenant. I wonder if he’ll be fully sound afterward?

Looks like the Ryan Air for Sizing John now. Don’t blame his connections for wanting to get away from Douvan. Pity. I have him backed e/w in the Champion Chase without Douvan market. Ryan Air looking like a good race. Un De Sceaux into 7/2

Yes, thought he looked well in control, then suddenly faded. May also be that we’ve under-rated him, and makes Douvan’s performances even more impressive

Horses not good enough for Champion Chase (Un De Sceaux, Sizing John) or the Gold Cup (Black Hercules, Sub-Lieutenant)

In the horses you name you have an Arkle winner and a JLT winner. No way near as exciting as Altior v Min but I think calling it a shocking renewal is harsh

Agree it’s always competitive, but does take away from the championship races e.g Vautour must have gone close in Gold Cup last year, Uxixandre would have possibly beaten Dodging Bullets

Really hoping Bristol De Mai runs here for a few reasons.

    1) I’ve got him at 110s and 120s for this.
    2) He’s only 6 and he’ll likely struggle in the Gold Cup
    3) With the Ryanair on the new course, it’ll still make it a nice stamina test for him

No way is BDM a Gold Cup horse – I don’t think he’d get the trip round Cheltenham, especially with Thistlecrack likely to tank on upfront. I agree the Ryanair could be a better option.

Some big price snaffling here. Road to Riches 140s-180s. No need to say what a silly price that is.

Also Aso 510s and Cold March 590s. Aso because I think the Arkle form is probably quite strong, and this is an improving 6yo for a clever trainer. We could see a Douvan-Fox Norton 1-2 in the Queen Mum and Sizing John-Aso 1-2 in the Ryanair. How’d that be for Arkle form? Plenty of good course + distance form. Entered in another similar handicap this weekend at Chelters. Wins there and the Ryanair definitely comes under consideration – he probably wouldn’t get in the handicap. Village Vic won the two 2m5f Gr3 handicaps at Cheltenham and was nowhere near good enough to win the Ryanair. Village Vic did have Vautour to contend with, however. Still, a very very tall order for Aso to win this, hence the price. Some 500s + 520s currently available if you want to hop on board too.

Cold March because I just like Cold March. Highly unlikely to be good enough and it’s still unclear whether he goes LH or acts at Cheltenham.

This race could cut up very badly indeed. Very little in the way of quality. Most of the good ones will be in the Gold Cup. Josses Hill 3rd favourite says it all.

Do you consider Un De Sceaux a threat for this?

Definitely, just not a horse I want to back. A – don’t know for sure he’s going to run. If Douvan gets injured, he runs in the Queen Mum. B – I don’t know how good he is over 2m 5f (on the new course, which could kill his stamina)
