Hopefully at least one of us will be happy on the day
January 11, 2010 at 15:32 #269299Barbers Shop on the snaff, will have to stop halfway for extra polos but pulling triple by then anyway, rumours are jock not carrying and horse to do dance routine at the lollipop whilst the others finish.
January 11, 2010 at 19:31 #269334Imperial Commander’s win last year was far and away my biggest ever AP winner having backed him all winter. Gutted he’s not going for this because I would smash into him again.
I hope Nolan see’s sense and sends Joncol for this and gives him another year before going for the Gold Cup. For a big horse this fella can really travel.
January 11, 2010 at 21:15 #269358Joncol is stuck between a rock and a hard place! He should have won the Lexus imo and as he gets older he will want a full 3m,he would certainly be of interest in the Ryanair on Soft ground and there has defineately been money for him! Lovely horse that he is!

Interesting now that Joncol is not entered for the Gold Cup!
This will see even more money for him now for the Ryanair!January 13, 2010 at 14:45 #269632I think he is a good thing for the RyanAir myself.
January 13, 2010 at 15:07 #269635Joncol to get an entry in the Cryin’Air, but his main target appears to be Irish Hennessy.
January 13, 2010 at 15:39 #269638I like Joncol a lot but I’d have reservations about whether Cheltenham would suit him as well as his main rivals.
January 13, 2010 at 15:45 #269640His best efforts have all come left-handed on undulating tracks, BB – I’m not at all worried about him handling the course at Cheltenham.
I think he will outclass a field of (albeit decent) handicappers, has-beens and dodgepots.
January 13, 2010 at 15:50 #269641I know but he’s a huge horse ain’t he? Just a slight doubt for me. Wonder if the Lexus run is a shade misleading given that Money Trix nearly won it? I doubt Joncol could have produced Barber’s King George run and think the latter will swamp him for pace. I’m often wrong though
January 13, 2010 at 15:52 #269642Sweep Barbers Shop into the "dodge-pot" pile.
January 13, 2010 at 15:54 #269643Risky one – I think that image will keep his price up as Poquelin will no doubt get smashed…but he’s a patent non-stayer over 3m despite his engine keeping him on the heels of superstars over 2.5.
His Paddy Power run alone points to him being the winner of this, imo
January 13, 2010 at 15:59 #269644Barbers Shop stays 3m easy, and gets 3m2f perfectly well based on his Hennessy run (I don’t subscribe to theories that he failed to get home).
The horse just doesn’t like winning.
January 13, 2010 at 16:06 #269647That’s the great thing about it all and ensures we don’t all back the same horses!
He galloped easily just off the pace for just under 3m in the Gold Cup and had no more to give, he was tracking Kauto comfortably for over 2.5 miles in the King George, having failed to get home in the Hennessy – he went from traveling comfortably to grinding it out with Niche and that race left a mark of sorts… they’ve tried to make him a 3m stayer and he clearly isn’t. If anything I like his attitude as he still doesn’t quit even when hurting over too far. Excellent jumper too and has form left right and centre with the very best 3m horses in the land.
Will be a large bet for me, as things stand.
January 13, 2010 at 16:34 #269653I can’t really understand why Poquelin is so much shorter than Tranquil Sea for this with most books. Obviously Poquelin’s trainer/jockey combo is factored into the price but I thought Tranquil Sea beat him easy in the Paddy Power. McNamara had the race won three out and Poquelin only ran on through beaten horses. Poquelin will have a very slight pull in the weights come March but for me, Tranquil Sea had plenty in hand on him in November. 7/1 is far too big given that the race will cut up.
I have my doubts as to whether Nolan will travel with Joncol this year and Barbers Shop has always been a bit of a talking horse IMO.
January 13, 2010 at 17:23 #269663Below are the comments in running for 2 horses that ran in their prep races for the festival in 2008 and 2009.
Always going well, tracked leader 3rd, led 3 out, cruised clear on long run before last, impressive
Always travelling well, chased clear leader after 7th, closed from 13th, led 3 out, nudged along and in command between last 2, easily
Both ran well below form in their Cheltenham races having shown their best form of the season in their prep race.
One of the trainers has learned his lesson to spectacular effect, if the other follows suit then success may follow in the Ryanair.

I must take umbridge with the above comments Grass,i believe this horse has an engine, unfortunately it runs out of fuel after 3 miles, and no way does he get a yard further, dropped back to 2m5f will see plenty of rev left to get him home in the Ryanair, his run behind Imperial Commander when giving him 2lb is the one piece of form that shouts Ryanair, particularly as it was over the course!Big player in my book,a touch of the Fondmorts me thinks!
