Loved his interview with nick luck yesterday. Asked what was his highlight of last week he said going home on Saturday night. Legend. Bet he would be great fun after a few pints. Brilliant rider indeed the best of his generation to my eyes and while he used to be tetchy in interviews seems much more at ease now. Also explained his rides last week so we’ll especially on kyprios and the enigmatic a rodin. Seems to know so much about the coolmore horses. Could be just aidan briefing him but he seems to have great knowledge of their issues and what’s the best way to ride them. Top man IMHO.

As a rider the best of a very bad lot. Massive advantage to be riding for an outfit with such a continuous flow of ammunition, something never seen before in the history of the sport.

I don’t know him personally, but has come across as plain rude on numerous occasions which cannot be explained purely by shyness and banal questions. Nobody has ever asked him for the world, just a few seconds.

He has improved markedly though. The Alan Hansen of racing. Doesn’t say much but usually sarcastic but funny. When he cocks up usually admits it too.

Of the winning rides Ryan Moore had to be crowned champion jockey at Royal Ascot, five out of six were red hot favourites. As Stilvi mentioned, loads of ammo. Ought to thank his lucky stars.

I’ve always liked the underrated James Doyle. Comes across as a really good soul. Possibly the best jockey to interview after a race.

Some people are born extroverts and Ryan clearly isn’t one of them. He is just a sensible, down-to-earth bloke with a sharp wit. He does occasionally lapse into Coolmore marketing mode but that is part of the job.

Yes, he benefits from riding the best horses. But you rarely see him mess up, and he also does well on outside rides, not just Ballydoyle hotpots.

I’ve never met him, but he’s a top bloke, in my opinion.

Moore is clearly a very good jockey. He does get on a lot of the best horses but you still have to win on them. Not every jockey has handled the pressure of the Ballydoyle job.

I am not sure if I would describe him as a great jockey, or at least not yet. It is easy to view the past through rose tinted glasses but is he as good as Cauthen, or Eddery, or Fallon? Not in my opinion. And that’s before even considering Piggott.

He deserves to be in the position he is in.. He didn’t just jump into it on day 1
I think the pressures of riding for the top job must be quite high too. No one is irreplaceable and you have to stay on top of your game. mind, body and soul. Its not a computer game.
I think he has improved the camera and microphone shoved under his helmet stuff and even if he was a mute it shouldn’t really matter as his job is to ride winners not provide anything of note for the viewer

Exactly. Not many sportsman are great with a microphone thrust on them. I think he is as good as Carson and eddery but just behind cauthen and of course the long fellow.

He doesn’t have to be ‘great’, or even good.

How is it he doesn’t seem to have any microphone problems when he goes to places like Japan?

Might it be because when he rode for Michael Stoute he didn’t like his jockeys to talk about their rides after a race? He’s so unlike his two brothers I often forget he’s related to them.

In what way Moehat? I would say Josh is more publicity shy (though he is gracious and charming when obliged to make statements). I think you may be onto something with the Stoute link in terms of TV interviews but Ryan is generally articulate and forthcoming when asked intelligent questions about the horses.

They used to say that he was the life and soul of the weighing room which I never understood. He always seemed painfully shy to me. I like the way that he talks more about the races now.

He comes accross as not suffering fools gladly when interviewed and I don’t really blame him for not being much more than monosyllabic when answering some of the daft arsed/inane questions that some of these presenters fire off (especially in the immediate aftermath of a race when walking back to the winners enclosure).

To me, his consistency is his greatest attribute in that he very much eliminates as many mistakes from his riding as possible (much better than any of his contemporaries do) – yes it helps to be riding the majority of the best horses around but you still have to go out and execute on the big stage. Because he is so consistent when he does throw in the odd average ride it kind of stands out more – just wish commentators would be even half as critical of the odd bad ride as they are of the good ones. They tend to always find a reason not to be critical whenever possible.

Personally, I think he sits a fair bit behind Piggott and a little less behind the likes of Cauthen/Eddery/Carson/Kinane in my pecking order.

Moore absolutely lifted Jan Brughel home. He never looked like winning until well inside the final furlong.

Looked to me as if greater stamina won the race.
