Just to flag the 16 page Betting Guide in the Racing Post today. May take a while to whet your appetite for this tournament after all the over-commercialised hype leading up to the off.

South Africa look the complete team.
I haven’t fully looked at the group format but the host nations have a fairly straightforward route to knock out stages I’d expect as one group will be loaded with teams to facilitate progress for top teams. We’ll know more after tonight’s match where neither side needs to worry about defeat.
Being hosts did little for the football teams recently when kiwis flopped and Aussies ran into a brick wall in the semis. In this code New Zealand were outclassed by the boks last month and that is ominous.
The Irish are top ranked but have never won a knockout match and have an aging fly half in Johnny Sexton. Their slogan of “don’t jinx it” is odd for a team tipped to go well.

    France NZ
The jury is out but I’m keen on France with home advantage.
Updates in play. An arm wrestle but France to come out on top.

Ridiculously good for opening match really, although in reality neither side will be that worried if they lose. They can’t fail to qualify and there’s no real advantage to winning the group as neither likely opponent is easy.

They have to do something about the seeding. Best Ireland and Scotland sides perhaps ever and Ireland could easily fall at the first knockout hurdle yet again and Scotland have a nightmare group. Meanwhile the dire England and Wales may contest a quarter final.

Fancy Argentina to go deep, they are no mugs these days and it’s a great draw. They were 17/10 to beat England a couple of weeks ago, if I was still a betting man I’d have had the bookies’ hands off. Evens now and to be honest it’s still a reasonable bet.

I am English for the record, I hope we do well but I’ll be watching our matches from behind the sofa.

6/5 available about Argentina  does anyone other than the bookies make England favs for this? There’s not much in it but Argentina are marginal favs all day long in my book.

Interesting match with a sending off and an opportunity to “level up “ spurned by the bunker. One an accidental clash of heads the other a cynical charge down with intent. I’d had called both the same way if offences carried out by the other side.
If the handicap remains at 5.5 take it

    England to Score 25+ Points @ 7/4

    In-Play Price Boosts
    England 21 v 3 Argentina

With 20 minutes to go two more scores and/ or the possibility of a try.
    This bet is a goer

    Well played Sam.

What the hell have I just seen? If you didn’t know you’d say it was Argentina that had 14 men for 77 minutes.

Only I could tip up at 17/10 and 6/5, they go a man up after three minutes and still get absolutely tonked

    Absolutely delighted though :yahoo:

It just meant England had more space to work with as happened to Liverpool the other week.
It actually frees up players who had specific roles and with players previously in set positions running all over the place, Argentina found themselves on a hiding to nothing. The pressure was on them to perform and they didn’t use the extra men once. The turning point was having a player each off field at the same time.

The other point is when you have an extra man you still have to work very hard to “create” that extra man in play situations. Argentina were totally clueless, even more so than New Zealand last night who could have sown up the match inside the first fifteen minutes, given France’s defensive frailties.

Yes they were running round like headless chickens at times.

Surprisingly for England, very few penalties given away after the red card incident. We are prone to that usually.

I think the Farrell red card a few weeks ago might be the best thing that could have happened to us.

Brilliant match and brings into sharp focus the laws of the game.
Clearly they have tied themselves up in knots over the head protocol.
Having nicked so many aspects and innovations from Rugby league. Putting someone on report in the other game means the sun binning will be reviewed in the calm of day later in the week by a panel. A bit of a kop out to avoid sendings off to keep 13 on the pitch but sensible in the light of yesterday’s match which pressures an instant decision.
Someone deliberately body checks an opponent ending up with head contact remains on field after review. In football the ‘ levelling up’ may well have seen a sending off.
In the challenge cup final and in league in general head high challenges remain meat and veg ( a dangerous position which could destroy the game through one successful class action).
But England have a renewed step and we can at least enjoy their rugby with the real action building up nicely to the knockout stages.

    Over 7.5 Tries @ 1/1
    Total Tries U/O 7.5
    Japan 14 v 7 Chile
Approaching half time and just three tries so far.
I’m anticipating five second half tries as teams tire and defences fall away…..

Japan head to the sheds with another try in the bank.
Four more tries required any side scoring will do nicely but ahead of the trajectory at least…..

Another winner that is three from three.

    South Africa vs Scotland

    South Africa (-11.0) @ 1/1
    Handicap Betting
    South Africa v Scotland
Scotland will be going great guns but I expect the boks not to be expansive and go for safety early on and that means keeping the ball in the ruck and forcing penalties. Playing tennis from each other’s half’s is very very boring and I’d hope for some running into the opposition rather than this mind numbing kicking. We’ll see.

I saw your post earlier Sam as was pleased to see the TMO step in after the initial held up decision for the last try 👍🏻

League is one of the few sports I don’t have a clue about, union rules here in the Westcountry. Do think the red card review system is sensible.

I do understand the need to protect players but there is a lot of inconsistency which is the unsatisfactory part. Some pretty clear SA head contact with a Scotland player wasn’t even looked at earlier.

I missed the sa game but thought Scotland would do ok.

This evening sees wales take on Fiji and I feel this is going to be a cracker with tries galore on both sides.
An unusual bet though for the first scoring play.
The Irish have landed some tidy bets this way and by the time the bookies cotton on the bird will have flown.
At some stage a team will go for drop goals as opening scores word will get around and the fans of that side will be on. After England’s first half drop goal rush last night thoughts of some teams will be on landing drop goals and there are few better kickers of field goals than WALES.
    First scoring play
    Wales drop goal @ 66/1
    First scoring play
    Fiji drop goal @ 66/1
    Small stake.
Seek out best odds yourself but those are the odds I’m on.
Dan Biggar to score 12+ points @ 6/4
Waisea Nayacalevu to score a brace of tries @ 12/1
If given the goal kicking duties, Dan Biggar could rack up a few.
I cannot see anywhere offering numbers of try’s I reckon on five if a list appears.
This match is too tight to call and it could go either way but the lad who managed two tries versus England could do it again tonight.
