Excellent win for Don Poli….his stamina shone through in abundance….I think we were robbed of potentially an absolute classic though with the defection of Coneygree….
Bryan Cooper had to nudge him a few times and thought he didn’t jump the best at a couple….he came back on the bridle with Kings Palace making one too many mistakes….the question I would ask is would he have been afforded that luxury had Coneygree been tanking along in front and jumping them for fun like he has been doing?
On all we know, surely Coneygree would have beaten Southfield Theatre just as easily….
Thought Geraghty made a huge mistake riding The Young Master like he did….why on earth did he ride it like that!!
Suppose we will see on Friday in the big one how good Coneygree really is!
As I said though, excellent win for Don Poli…rescued my week a little after a disaster of a first day…

At the moment, there might be a case for Coneygree being rated just ahead of Don Poli Zamorston, on what they’ve done so far. But Don Poli is yet to race against established chasers. Sort to only do what’s asked and imo would’ve found a lot more if required. Am a fan of both horses, but Coneygree is an 8 year old and fragile in the past (not a good long term ante-post proposition) something that I believe influenced connections Gold Cup decision. Not sure how much improvement there will be after this season is over. Gives the impression is the finished article where as Don Poli will imo carry on improving.
I too was surprised Barry took Kings Palace on, may be he wanted to get the Pipe horse at it (succeeded but went too fast himself). Although beaten off too far out to blame that. Cattermole was wrong in commentary, Young master is usually ridden near the pace, but does not need to lead like that. Kings Palace, like last year went off too hard. Not much of a finishing effort left and despite the pace must be a doubt is a weak finisher or needs an early lead or may be a drop in distance. Possibly a combination of all three.
Southfield Theatre ran a good race and finished with a cut leg. Way Nicholls improves horses would not be a surprise to see him make the grade to Grade 1 next year too.
