Going to be trawling through 2014’s Albert Bartlett to find the winner of this, will update in a day or two when I’ve done some research.
Champagne West has my immediate attention, though haven’t looked at any of the other horses. To be honest though haven’t even watched any of his races, or re-watched the Albert Bartlett since March, vaguely remember the finish but after it I put it down as a sketchy race in which I wouldn’t bet big on the top 3 ante-post for next years festival so I fancy something outside the top 3 to improve for the larger obstacles.
Could be chatting sh*t though, will have to watch the race again.

Two I like –
Champagne West
BallyaltonSeptember 17, 2014 at 13:23 #490404Expect Kings Palace to quickly climb the betting if he wins a couple of easy races early in the season.
He’s one I’ll take on at every chance in the big races, though. His style of running is effectively suicide in the RSA Chase and you can never really trust chasers who have had two falls in five hurdling starts.
September 18, 2014 at 07:23 #490443Quite like
Don Poli
for this, and he’d be my early fancy, along with
Seeyouatmidnight
, who I’m hoping has a big season ahead of him.
Also interested to see how
Sammy Black
develops this season, though at this stage, he may be more of a JLT candidate.

I’d think Don Poli would be the one getting sent to the JLT, Mullins did the same with Sir Des Champs, won the Martin Pipe Handicap Hurdle at Cheltenham and sent him to the Jewson the next year. Previous-year handicap performers have a good record in the JLT, whereas only 1 horse in the past 5 years has gone from a handicap to finishing in the top 3 of the RSA. If you look at the JLT, of the 12 horses that have finished in the top 3 since the race started four years ago, 6 of them raced in a handicap at the previous years Cheltenham.

Killala Quay of interest too, but another that may go down the JLT route.
September 24, 2014 at 22:04 #490848Slightly out of left field but Blakemount will be over-priced and under-rated due to being with the Sue Smith yard however his form over hurdles is up there with the best of them.
Ran an excellent second at Doncaster when I was there to see Annie Power in January. Fine looking beast and ran Urban Hymn close on ground less than ideal.
Should come into his own over fences.
October 30, 2014 at 18:48 #493831I like the look of Very Wood – didn’t get the credit he deserved for hosing up at last years festival and could be yet another to come back and win again, taken 25s and gone in again at 20s, my main concern is they may take the easier option of the 4 miler
October 30, 2014 at 20:34 #493838I do think this
Saphir du Rheu
is a chaser in waiting and 3 miles will be perfect so its the RSA for me.
October 30, 2014 at 20:49 #493841Apache Stronghold goes tomorrow at Down Royal, in my opinion he could develop into an RSA horse, and I’ve had a few bob on at a three figure price on Betfair.

Super round from Apache, love this horse.
October 31, 2014 at 17:34 #493936THM: I love him too but took the 33s for the Jewson!! After that however I have had to back him at 33s for the RSA too – reckon Very Wood could end up in the 4 miler
October 31, 2014 at 19:05 #493945Yeah he’s got plenty of speed for two and half miles to be fair, when I backed him on Betfair there was no JLT market and he was a ludicrous price for the RSA so I hadn’t any option!
Be interesting to see where Very Wood goes next, because I read on twitter that the Drinmore is his target over 2m 4f.
That’s shaping up to be some race: Apache, The Tullow Tank, Very Wood, presumably Mullins will have something too.
December 2, 2014 at 11:52 #497162Drinmore winner Valseur Lido looks to be RSA bound!

Saw a Grade 1 Chaser today in
Saphir du Rheu
,trouble is he’s only 5yo and the RSA is a 7yo’s race.I still think Paul Nicholls will take the 3m route rather than the JLT route with this smart horse.Cut to 14’s and taken by me! ‘Vatour’ could put him off taking the 21/2m route hopefully.
December 5, 2014 at 16:39 #497483Saphir Du Rheu was impressive but with the second favourite not jumping a fence the race was obviously not the test it first looked.
As regards the future the best of his form is going right-handed. Cheltenham and three miles might not be his bag. That’s not to say he won’t pick up a nice prize (perhaps in Ireland) over a shorter trip.
December 6, 2014 at 23:27 #497748Could see him ducking Cheltenham for Aintree to be honest.
