D-Day for Chezza as his beloved Flying Honours takes centre stage!

Yes, as fine a winner of the Stonehenge Stakes at Salisbury as you’re ever likely to see figures among the entries.

Wonderful middle-distance pedigree, lovely-looking colt with scope, pulverised Stormbuster in Wiltshire and the latter hosed up in the Haynes, Hanson and Clark at Newbury last Friday.

Some might be surprised to see him 6/4 favourite ahead of Auguste Rodin (4/1), who won like a colt who doesn’t do more than he has to at Leopardstown.

But he’s one of four from Ballydoyle in the race hence cannot yet be regarded as a certain runner in my book.

Shirley Heights, Ela-Mana-Mou (Troy second), Frankel and Roaring Lion all won this race.

Coroebus was very much the moral winner of this last year too, hitting the front miles too early and idling badly in front

So it’s a good race historically

Hard to see auguste rodin running so soon, the vertum futurity would seem the logical next race for him

“Shirley Heights, Ela-Mana-Mou (Troy second), Frankel and Roaring Lion all won this race.”

Only Roaring Lion won this race. The other three won it at Ascot, where grumpy traditionalists like me think it still should be run.

I always think of mile 2yo pattern races being for potential Derby horses so I’m hacked off about the Royal Lodge being switched from the Old Mile at Ascot to the Rowley Mile at Newmarket and the Futurity at Doncaster being a straight mile instead of the round one.

But “tradition” is only using what things were like when we first got interested as a benchmark.

So I’m trying to get over it!

No winner this century of this race has gone on to win the Derby. Flying Honours might be better off not running in it. ;o)

Would be a shock if he lost this, looking like little in opposition to run.

I think changing a 2yo pattern race from a round to a straight mile changes the type of horse it attracts.

Auguste Rodin out to 9/2 yet is 100/30 favourite for the Futurity with Flying Honours 6/1 (from 10/1 which I took before he was declared here).

This discrepancy suggests to me Auguste Rodin may be withdrawn from this tomorrow, especially as stablemate Greenland is shortening up.

Auguste Rodin was going to Futurity or Dewhurst the last I heard.

Four declared, no Auguste Rodin, Flying Honours odds on.

Flying Honours is 4-11 this morning. Chezza must be feeling even more smug than usual with his 6-4. 😎

It’s still got to win though, three last time out winners in opposition, those lacking moral fibre might be hedging at Betfair Exchange, but Chezza’s made of sterner (or stupider) stuff and will let it ride!

Watching horses dawdle for 5 furlongs then sprint the last two is not a satisfying watch.

I agree, but I’m not making any excuses.

For sure, a dawdle then sprint finish is a recipe for a bunch finish, but a quality Classic aspirant, even one bred for middle distances, would have summoned the quality to win.

A farce of a race really

It was indeed a messy farce of a race.

Return it to Ascot where Frankel confirmed he was going to be a monster
