Channel 4 continued to struggle with it’s viewing figures for racing after pulling in an average of 600,000 on the opening day compared to 1 million when the BBC showed it.

Channel 4 claim they are pleased with the figures and say a long programme tends to mean a lower average.

I think they spend far too much time talking in the studio and not enough time with the horses. I always switch over in between races now. I preferred the old production company. The thing that really annoys me is that touchscreen video thing you get on the morning line. It think it’s supposed to be all "new age" technology, but it looks really amateur hour. Much better to just let the videos follow automatically like they used to.

How do you have an "Average" with just one set of results?

It’s not "one set" of results – it’s the average viewing figures throughout the entire broadcast.

I would suggest 600,000 compared with the BBC’s 1,000,000 could be spun as being good viewing figures if you take the view Channel Four is a minority broadcaster compared with the BBC being the national broadcaster.

It’s like comparing the Morning Star’s sales figures with that of The Sun – they don’t stand up head to head but in their own niche world they are considered good.
