RUK reported that Richard Kingscote recieved a 1 day ban for careless riding on the favourite Above Limits, owned by Findlay and Bloom, at Sandown in the 5.50.

But is this enough in this instance? Kingscote took the filly from stall 1 to lead on the rail and make all the running, but in doing so he cut accross as soon as he pinged the gates and didn’t ride out his stall position. Clearly he must have known he would be in hot water for making such a move but chose to ignore it.

My gripe is simple, the horse had been well backed by connections and Kingscote obviously knowing he’s riding with a few bags of treasure on his shoulders has just shrugged off the possibility of occuring a ban and could quite easily have caused a dangerous situation. Given the nature of the game jockeys will always be subject to pressures like this on occasions granted, but, is one day enough?

Chastisement for breaking the rules in racing is little more than a slap on the wrist.

If a jockey is found guilty for this sort of incident or over use of the whip, the horse should be disqualified.

I know there will be a lot who don’t agree with this – but we have to have to punish those who break the rules.

Well, I’ve watched the race a few times now and I’m still a bit surprised. Kingscote certainly knew the stats regarding horses drawn from that box at Sandown and made a dash for the far-side rail.

I’ve only seen the race from the angle shown in real-time on RUK and I don’t understand why his ride was considered ‘careless.’

    Did he hamper anyone?

He didn’t hamper anyone on this occasion but if the horse next door had broke just as well then there could easily have been a coming together.

Not sure how far the orange polls are away from the stall, i expect 50 yards? But you are supposed to ride out your stall to that point and gradually tack over. By that point he was nearly on the rail!!

I think Kingscote was prepared to take a ban in order to land the punt for connections who had backed the horse, so in this case I don’t think a one day ban is sufficient when there was no regard for the rules and safety of other runners.
