His greatest ride, in my opinion, was that never say die effort on Anzum in the 1999 Stayers’ Hurdle.

I wish Richard a long and happy retirement.

Congratulations to Richard on a fantastic career, and thankfully finishing
safe in one piece. As has been said by a couple on here, you might have thought
he would see out the season. It’s maybe hard to know the reasons he hung up
his boots after an unexceptional meeting at Newton Abbot. Perhaps that’s just
the mark of the man with his unassuming nature, but the week before the Grand
National I just wonder if at 43 thought it was a bridge too far. Who could blame
him if he did, like all jockeys he’s hit the ground many a time and with nothing
to prove and being fit and well then why take the risk.

He’s a model for any young jockey to follow and I wish him all the best in his
retirement from the saddle, but I doubt it’s his retirement from the game.

Luke Harvey stated the reason he went now was because he didn’t want his retirement to overshadow the jockey championship which is likely to go to the last day , classy thing to do if true

The mark of the man is the fact he came back year after year despite finishing 2nd to Mccoy, his loyalty to Hobbs ( why didn’t Henderson go after him when Mick Fitz retired ) , wonder who,ll get the Hobbs job , it’s about time Sean Bowen got a good job

I just consider it a privilege to have been acquainted with such a modest, unassuming, ever-cheerful gentleman — a true champion in every sense. Was so looking forward to him riding our horse in the Aintree bumper on Saturday. If only he’d postponed his retirement for a week…he could have gone out on a winner! ;-)

Great interview on Nick Luck this morning, what a thoroughly good chap Richard Johnson is! Good to see him retiring in one piece and at a time of his choosing.
Apparently he is not interested in being a trainer, and Philip Hobbs said Tom O’Brien will be stable jockey.

Hobbs also said he’d be using Micheal Nolan, and the 2 good 3 claimers attached to his yard.

As others have said , I am really pleased to see him getting out in one piece.
Always seemed a thoroughly nice man to me , as well as being a top professional. I think that it is testimony to his character that I believe he still has a couple of his old horses at his farm (Menorah and Looks like Trouble , if memory serves me correctly).
Hope that he enjoys his retirement , he deserves it.
