Just heard it on RTV. It cannot have been easy being runner up to McCoy for so many years and it was great when he finally won. He had a great career and was a fine ambassador for racing.

Just seen it on RP news.

A fantastic servant to the sport and brilliant jockey. Surprised he didn’t have a last blow out at Aintree but hope he enjoys his retirement.

Agree with Seemorebusiness. Very strange timing with Aintree around the corner. Guess he didn’t like his potential bookings!

All the best Richard, a credit to the National Hunt game. Love it you’ve retired in a low key way.

The way he took the 2015/2016 season by the scruff of the neck is my abiding memory of him.

Riding 2/3 winners everyday during the summer and ending up winning the jockeys championship by a landslide on 235 winners, amazing season.

I’m a little surprised he decided to retire on a losing ride a week before Aintree though and only a few weeks before the end of the season. After 30 years riding, he could have held on for another few days or weeks surely, but that’s just me being greedy.

Best of luck in the future Richard and well done on a great career. Over 3,800 winners. Will never be seen again I bet.

He,s retired in a very Richard Johnston way , no unnecessary fuss and no big McCoy like send off , I hope he stays in racing , think he,d be a good trainer , I can’t see him being involved in the media

Maybe it is a little surprising to call it a day just before Aintree but there comes a time when you have just had enough.

I suspect he knows he is not going to be Champion Jockey again and it does not look like he is going to ride many Cheltenham Festival winners again. At his age, does he really want to be carrying on in those circumstances?

He has been there and done it, has nothing left to prove and is going out in one piece. Good luck to him.

R.J. Has ridden quite a few bumper winners for me for which I am very appreciative.
He has also endured more than his share of broken bones.
Certainly one of the stars who got me interested into jumps racing.

I can actually say I was there when he rode his first winner, Rusty Bridge at 25/1 for his mother in a hunter chase at Hereford, April 1994.

I was distinctly unimpressed, as I’d backed the runner-up at 8/1 and the winning distance was a head!

Having sat with him on a few Cheltenham preview evenings in Chipping Camden, I can say he’s just as thoroughly easy going and likeable as he seems. Wish him well with whatever he has planned for the future.

The last time Richard Johnson spoke to me he told me to **** off.

I was a medic responder at the Canal Turn when Balthazar King fell in the 2015 National and was the first to reach him.

In fairness, he was probably more concerned about the horse, which was understandable, so was I if I’m honest, so I’ve never held a grudge against him for that.

It’s a shame he was around the same time as McCoy as he would, undoubtedly, have been champion jockey many more times.

Definitely one of the nicer guys in the weighing room

    Anyway happy retirement

Met him once in the paddock at kempton.

    A real shock frankly

A genuinely funny sharp and warm leading sportsman with zero airs and graces. Fantastic bloke. No wonder he is adored

Wonder who Johnson would say is the best horse of his career.

    Walsh – Kauto Star.
    McCoy – ?
    Geraghty – Sprinter Sacre.
    Johnson – ?

If he values his marriage, he’d better say Looks Like Trouble! Trained by his father-in-law.
