“Firstly, the banking crisis was global. It was not Labour’s fault. It’s funny how the current government blames everything on Covid and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, but the global financial crisis of 2008 was apparently all the fault of Gordon Brown”
———————————————LOL
My point exactly, or rather the opposite, CAS. You really can’t see that it works both ways.”Ginger, Gladiateur made that point. Why are you addressing your response to me?
July 5, 2024 at 08:56 #1700776“Had they gone for Rory Stewart” (instead of Truss).
That would have been somewhat difficult, Ginger. He ceased to be an MP in 2019. All he does now is appear on podcasts with Campbell and pretends he is important.
This article sums him up, especially “Stewart is like one of those people who makes a grand announcement on Twitter that they’re leaving Twitter, in the mistaken belief that anybody gives a toss and that this is the biggest deal since Miss Otis regretted that she was unable to lunch today.”
Rory Stewart is everything that’s gone wrong with the Tories
July 5, 2024 at 08:57 #1700777“It’s beyond me that they didn’t vote for Rory Stewart. I think even I would have voted Tory if he’d been their leader!”
That is because he is not a Conservative. He ought to be honest and join Labour.
July 5, 2024 at 09:05 #1700779It won’t happen but this General Election ought to be the death knell of first past the post.
July 5, 2024 at 09:30 #1700783Don’t worry, now it’s negatively affecting the right you can be sure the calls for FPTP to go will come loud and clear.
Before anyone extrapolates the actual result to PR, remember that people vote differently under FPTP. I suspect a fair amount of tactical voting happened and that many probably don’t bother with small parties simply because they see it as a wasted vote.
July 5, 2024 at 11:24 #1700789Agree with the negative comments about Stewart above.
I normally watch a fair bit of the election results, but last night didn’t bother. All sides made a real song and dance/or tried to, of the obvious. It was as tedious as the campaign itself.
Standout result for me is that 21% actually voted for a party who have racked up a massive majority. 4/5 People didn’t have enough faith to vote for them. That shouldn’t sit well with anyone.
The only ‘good thing’ about the present system was keeping Farage and his right-wing cronies down to 4 seats.
Those that did vote just voted against the Tory party, not for anything of note promised by Starmer. I hate to think it was the antics of Ed Davey that inspired the Liberal result. What an absolute chump he looked this morning. Sadly, another sign of our dumbed down times.
July 5, 2024 at 11:44 #1700790I think that Rory and Alastairs podcast have been partly responsible for this result: their podcast being the most popular one in the country, their public appearances being sell outs and their books topping the best sellers. Rory is not Labour although I think he finally decided to vote Labour this time after ruling out voting Green. His political values are Conservative through and through, something that he explains at length in the podcast. He was thrown out of the party by Johnson along with thirteen other, decent Conservative MP’s but still remained a Conservative at heart. Had events not unfolded the way they did he might have been able to stand as leader. If anything he underestimates how important he is. I listened to one of his unscripted lectures and it was riveting. Their Leading podcasts in which they talk to a variety of people, not just politicians are very insightful.
July 5, 2024 at 11:49 #1700791How did the world ever manage to survive without podcasts?
July 5, 2024 at 14:36 #1700804I don’t even know what a podcast is.
I've stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains
I've walked and I crawled on six crooked highwaysJuly 5, 2024 at 15:44 #1700805Sorry CAS, don’t know why I put “CAS” as I was thinking Glad’ at the time.
Didn’t say Rory instead of Truss; I said Rory “straight away”. ie Obviously for him “straight away” meant when he stood for leader. Sadly, am well aware he left some time ago.
Be careful of taking stuff Spiked says as the truth. They are towards the right of the Tory Party, if not Reform. So is in their interests to shout down Rory Stewart.
Value Is EverythingJuly 5, 2024 at 15:58 #1700807That would be news to “Spiked”. It was formed out of the ashes of “Living Marxism”. Its main writers would not identify as right wing.
July 5, 2024 at 16:02 #1700808Thanks Moehat. Just couldn’t bring myself to vote.
It is really the right wing of the Tory Party who’ve caused all the trouble.
If Bad’ or Brav’ or Patel become leader of the Torries I won’t be voting for a right wing Tory leader… And if Starmer keeps to the centre – am encouraged by what I’ve seen of his shadow cabinet (bar his deputy)… Might even find myself voting Labour if they find a solution to the immigration problem.Value Is EverythingJuly 5, 2024 at 16:08 #1700809Reform are excited with their results and obviously Labour are as well, but this election seems more of a vote against Conservative, far more than votes to support the other two.
Now to see if Starmer can deliver anything at all, but time will tell. I don’t hold out much hope to be honest. Immigration will probably get worse and that will only fuel Farage which is a worry, especially looking at what is happening across the channel. Hopefully there will be a focus on the NHS, but there always seems like a lot of talk about that and unfortunately it seems to get worse.
If the Conservatives can’t get their shite together and become a united party after this, then there isn’t much hope for them for a few years.
Nice of Sunak to apologize and understand the anger of the people, why did it need an election to make the Conservatives understand that? This has been a few years in the making and is a result of complete complacency and arrogance on their part.
The thoughts of Patel, Braverman and Badenoch being at the head of a leadership contest is worrying. Surely they must have learned something from Truss?
July 5, 2024 at 16:11 #1700810If I were living in Birmingham or Leicester I would have voted Labour to keep these “Independents” out.
I applaud the stance Starmer made on Gaza before the election. Just hope he does not give ground just to placate antisemitic lefties.
Value Is EverythingJuly 5, 2024 at 16:26 #1700811How could people have voted against Jess when she lost her shadow cabinet post because she said she had to represent her Muslim constituents and couldn’t support the party stance on the war. It would have been a travesty if she’d lost her seat.
July 5, 2024 at 16:38 #1700813“How could people have voted against Jess when she lost her shadow cabinet post because she said she had to represent her Muslim constituents and couldn’t support the party stance on the war.”
It wouldn’t have mattered what her stance was Moehat, that wasn’t the agenda. She was representing her Muslim constituents, but background intimidation surpasses that.
As I said…….little acorns.

In addition to those two, Blackburn and Dewsbury & Batley now have Indpendent ‘Islamic’ MPs. I’ll withhold opinions on them until I’ve seen them in action in Parliament. A solicitor, an IT consultant, a former LibDem councillor and an optician: on the face of it a good mix, time will tell
