Big field handicaps at York are a total mystery and if we can get one top rated winner from that meeting i’ll be happy. Meanwhile there’s a good card at Hamilton where Emmet Mullins has two in the Lanark Bell, including top rated Toll stone. However there must be doubt with severe storms forecast, I wouldn’t be sure that Mr Mullins’ charges will make it across the Irish Sea.

I’ll be making a slight adjustment to the ratings from Sunday September 1st. As things stand up to now the base rating is formed and then adjusted according to the closest finish in the last two runs, subtracting the number pounds equivalent from the base for a recent form rating. That’s the original method according to ‘The Compleat Handicapper’ but it was published 1978, the racing world has changed and I just feel it needs a tweak for better returns. On that basis I will use the base rating, measured against the winner of a horse’s previous race, but will only rate those horses that have finished in the first 4 in either of their last 2 races. That should weed out a few of those top rated who look well handicapped but have been well beaten of late. My experiments over the past 3 months suggest returns are a bit better than using the recent form rating.
