I think when people such as Alastair Down come out and say:

‘It has been an open secret in racing for a good 20 years there was a culture of deceit among some northern jockeys’

News Of The World, Alastair Down’s Column 25/10/2008

It tells you all you need to know. It goes on but no one really cares – cause it’s all one big ‘Jolly’ paid for by Mug Owners and Mug Punters.

Perhaps if he hadn’t been on the sauce for 20 years he may have mentioned it earlier. But then why would he?

If the game is bent then how can some punters make a profit from studying form alone, with no or little inside information?

Probably by steering well clear of low-grade events where the temptation seems to be to make more money by laying/stopping/not trying than it’s possible to earn in prize money. Anyone who can make money just by studying the form book and without inside information in anything worse than class three races is a better punter than virtually all of us.

I too do not bet in poor grade racing.

I agree Librettist, the skulduggery that does go on is primarily in the lower grade, still do not believe it is rife though.

There are other reasons why it is almost impossible to make betting pay in this grade pay. One is that a horse with no form at all only has to improve slightly to win. Another is, the reason many are in this grade is temperament, nobody knows when these will have a going day.
