It wasn’t the performance or the pulling up that set off my alarm bells, the way Ruby Walsh gave him a couple of smacks then decided not to continue made me think the pairing may have done the same thing if Walsh had been on him in the King George.
What really caught my attention was Ruby’s face on the way back in. He looked absolutely mortified.
Take nothing away from the winner but I think Roberto Goldback would have run away with it were it not for the blunder. A strange race really, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a horse unship a rider then trot away in such a manner. If he were a person, I’d call it sheepish.
May 4, 2011 at 17:55 #353752Robbie Power had horrible luck this year.
Jesus Kauto Star was awful…..terrible and that all because he was too old and tired.
If Nicholls does not retire him it would raise a lot of eye brows

Grrrrr Roberto Goldback, how could that have happened? Didn’t look like Robbie Power helped him at the last, was way off it. Was screaming at the TV, was sure he was going to win. Sooooo gutted. And then Apt Approach did exactly the same in the next chase. Also horrible to see the great Kauto Star pulled up.

Ruby
How much older and tireder is he than when he ran 3rd in the Gold Cup?
Fwiw, I thought Ruby was decidedly easier on him from the start, which was surprisng considering this sharper trip and how well he ran when up with, or forcing, the pace at Cheltenham. Kauto has obviously lost a lot of his speed, but might still be a force when stamina is more at a premium.
May 5, 2011 at 00:14 #353826Very dramatic race.
Kauto is more a of a risk bet now – but he deffo deserves one more chance next season. I still think he retains enough ability to win good races, but would good races would he be eligible for? (top weight in the Whitbread – or whatever it is called now.)
Maybe a National swansong

This horse has got to be found a fitting end!

May 5, 2011 at 02:06 #353834Couldnt understand what was to be gained by running Kauto…?
Is Clive Smith short of a few quid??
At the end of the season ( Yes I know he’s only run three times) you would like to think they would like to look after the Crown Jewels … or am I missing something here??
May 5, 2011 at 14:06 #353904They have to retire him…I don’t think connections can see the wood from the trees. I can see Denman staying in training next year, but not Kauto. Like I’ve said before, I’ve never been Kautos biggest fan, but it’s hurting me to see him on the downgrade like this.
