May 19, 2011 at 15:22 #18618The magnificent Goldikova makes her seasonal re-appearance on Sunday at Longshamp, she beat Byword by 1/2 a length in the same race a year ago and he looks the only threat as he re-opposes again this year.
Anybody willing to take her on? Not me, she’s opened up 4/5 with Stanley James, look’s to good to resist.
May 19, 2011 at 16:35 #356127She never seems to be at her tip-top best first time out though
4/5 is a bit skinny for me
May 20, 2011 at 07:26 #356183Stablemate Rajsaman is an improved horse; his 4th in the HK Mile hinted at that, and last race’s win over Byword confirmed it. He went to Dubai in between, where we didn’t learn too much (1 decent run on the Tapeta and a shocking 5 wide trip in the Duty Free).
He would be a bigger chance with cut in the ground however.I like the step up in trip for Dick Turpin; he tried 10f last year but pulled too hard. I was stunned when they didn’t ride him on the pace in the Lockinge (he settled beside Canford Cliffs in the run), because that was the only way he could’ve won. But maybe they were teaching him to settle for this race. Interesting runner.
May 21, 2011 at 17:32 #356490Byword and Goldikova renewing rivaly that saw them separated by just half a length last year. The race is 9 furlongs and not Goldikova’s preferred 8 furlongs, and the ground this year is good to soft (last year was good), so I think that Byword’s slightly better stamina may just turn the tables on Goldikova this time.
May 21, 2011 at 20:40 #356523Rajsaman looks very interesting to me – close up in HK mile, still looks fairly unexposed on turf, beat Byword cosily enough last time (admittedly 7lb swing today). Won last two races for this jockey. I’ll probably back him each-way as he’ll be too big a price in my opinion.

Agreed that Rajsaman is a danger. Like Byword he will appreciate the 9f, and he’ll appreciate cut (unlike Goldikova).
But I actually like Dick Turpin to spring an upset. Many have always thought that he’d be better over a bit further than a mile. He tried 10f last year but pulled too hard.

May 22, 2011 at 13:59 #356629All hail Goldikova! Fabulous mare. Let’s hope she’s comes out of this well and comes to Ascot.
May 22, 2011 at 14:18 #356634I really adore this mare. Not only is she extremely talented but she does not know how to run anything less than 100% every time.
Delighted she won!
Dick Turpin showed yet again how flattered he was last year by those two victories over Canford.
May 22, 2011 at 14:32 #356642I think something might be amiss with Dick Turpin, that’s two bad runs in a row and he’s normally extremely consistent. I think the quick turn around did for him but something may come to light later on.
Agree though that he clearly won’t beat Canford Cliffs on this year’s form.

Goldikova’s time: 2 secs under standard – never,
ever
, believe French going descriptions or forecasts.
May 22, 2011 at 19:01 #356695Does that mean 2 seconds faster?
May 22, 2011 at 19:32 #356701Yes it does. Looking at the race’s history on Wiki there have been some very slow times. However, her win last year was nearly two seconds faster but I don’t know about the sectionals and I do think the ground was slower this year.
I think the most important thing to take out of her performance was the speed she showed between one and two furlongs out, as that’ll be most relevant in her future races. Also think Cirrus Des Aigles has a Group 1 in him, as he’s performed very well in both this race and the Prix Ganay against top class opposition.
May 22, 2011 at 21:12 #356717He’s a Longchamp specialist.
May 22, 2011 at 21:20 #356721Hmm maybe limited then. Prix du Moulin?
May 22, 2011 at 21:29 #356724He prefers 9f or a little further. Has probably lost his shot this season. Another crack at the Prix Daniel Wildenstein beckons I’d have thought. Back to Hong Kong after that and then retirement.
