I understand why people may think it was an awful ride by Peslier, but Goldikova never in anyway dropped out off the front 2 in the final 100 yards or so. If it really was as awful as some think, she’s clearly run an incredible race in defeat. Maybe it was just bravery, guts and class that got her so close.

Fist, I can’t believe you’re picking holes in Goldikova’s mile form just because she got beat having gone off too quckly from a wide draw over 7f! Even her mile form from last year, which is pretty bulletproof, put her on a different street to that mob today.

On the more general point of the ride on Goldikova today, there is no doubt that Peslier got it wrong. However, those calling for his head (or ‘dumbest ride of the season’ or whatever) are going OTT. From where she was drawn, he could either:

    A) slot in behind inferior horses, forcing her to pick her way through the field over a trip that’s short of her ‘usual’.

    B) hope she can hot-foot it to a prominent berth and pray she’s not used too much energy up in doing so.

He choose B), and I’d summise that even Peslier himself was astounded with the speed she showed, eventually getting carried away and asking her to do too much too soon.

I’d say it was a case of ‘job done’, rather than a bad ride.
They’ve got far bigger fish to fry than a tinpot gp1 over the wrong distance, and they know she’s going to face a searing pace in the Breeder’s Cup, so this was the perfect race to put her right.
Given she’s had 7 weeks off and will come on for the run, the way she had them all off the bridle after 5f speaks volumes for her massive ability, and they won’t see which way she went at Santa Anita imo.

It’s basically that these fillies that are going around at the moment are the worst lot I can remember in a very long time. The season started off with Rainbow View disappointing and Fantasia (made 6/5 fav for the 1000G) being hailed as a new superstar. Everything since has gone from bad to worse. Really Goldikova has beat very little and although she looked very special in the Prix D’astarte that race was on soft ground and Elusive Wave’s best performance of her life was on g/f and Aqlaam was also on fast ground.

Where on earth people get the idea OP did something wrong yesterday bamboozles me. She is always ridden up with the pace she’s a proven miler racing over 7f so even more reason to be up there and use her proven stamina…quite frankly anyone who thinks there was a better way to ride her apart from going sooner than she did is way off the mark. She was beaten by a faster 7f horse on the day and had he held her up she would most likely have been beaten even further

At the end of the day she’s the best miler of the fairer sex around but when it comes to boy V girl 1m or not, she’ll be hard pushed IMO to live with the likes of Rip Van Winkle, Zacinto and co who are a totally different kettle of fish to what she’s been beating.

    Fist
They weren’t fillies she trounced in last year’s Breeder’s Cup.
Rip Van Winkle is bound to need a strong pace over the sharp 1m but, as yesterday showed, nothing they can produce will enable them to shake this lady off, and she’ll murder him for a finish.

Wow. I’m in total harmony with Reet on this one. The Foret was there to shake off the cobwebs and get her ready for the actual prize. I am continuously astounded how people are willing to throw the mortgage on these short odds in grp. 1’s. Rip Van Winkle, Mastercraftsman et.al. against Goldikova when all are at their best in a mile race is not really a contest.

O’Brien knows what he is doing with RVW running him over 10 furlongs in the classic.

I’ve only just put 2 and 2 together, and realised that Varenar was the horse that was finishing fast in the Maurice de Gheest.

Didn’t look at the race because it was a busy day, and the race wasn’t on telly.

Next time we like the same horse, PM me Graeme!
