A baker’s dozen will line up in Saturday’s $200,000 Dixie S. (G2), a 1 1/8-mile feature on Pimlico’s turf course which highlights the Preakness Day undercard. Favoritism will likely fall on JUST AS WELL (A.P. Indy), the Jonathan Sheppard-trained seven-year-old who was elevated to first in the Northern Dancer Turf S. (Can-G1) last September before going unplaced in both the Canadian International (Can-G1) and Japan Cup (Jpn-G1).
Prior to his winning trip at Woodbine, Just as Well had run a close second in the Dixie, won the Arlington H. (G3), and finished a strong second to eventual divisional champion Gio Ponti (Tale of the Cat) in the Arlington Million (G1). The dark bay enters the Dixie off a get-fit fourth in the Ben Ali S. (G3) in his first race over Polytrack.
STRIKE A DEAL (Smart Strike), who last visited the winner’s circle following the 2008 Red Smith H. (G2), endured a brief campaign of only three starts last season. He was unplaced in every one, including the Dixie, and might be in need of a race following a layoff of more than 10 months. WESLEY (El Prado
), the 2009 Dixie third-placer, is a Grade 2 veteran who enters off a fourth in the Maker’s Mark Mile S. (G1) at Keeneland, while River City H. (G3) upsetter RAHYSTRADA (Rahy) was a solid third behind Karelian (Bertrando) and Gio Ponti in the Tampa Bay S. prior to an allowance score at Keeneland last month.
Four years after Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Barbaro suffered an ultimately fatal injury in the Preakness, his full brother NICANOR (Dynaformer) will take to the Old Hilltop turf for the Dixie. An impressive winner of his first two turf attempts last summer, the four-year-old was only a length back in fifth in a Keeneland allowance on April 8 following a layoff of more than nine months. Others of note are Florida Cup Turf Classic winner PICOU (With Approval); Mervin H. Muniz Jr. Memorial H. (G2) runner-up PICK SIX (Dyanformer); Henry S. Clark S. winner BALTIMORE BOB (Malibu Moon); and the progressive allowance winner GRASSY (El Prado
) from the barn of Christophe Clement.
Sheppard will also have the favorite in the $100,000 Gallorette H. (G3), a 1 1/16-mile turf event for fillies and mares. RAINBOW VIEW (Dynaformer), the multiple Group 1 winner who was named champion juvenile filly in Europe in 2008, enters off a highly impressive allowance win at Keeneland last month. Second in the E.P. Taylor S. (Can-G1) in her North American debut last fall, the bay not surprisingly failed to run up to her best form on Pro-Ride when fifth in the Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic (G1) two back.
Irish Group 3 winner AVE (GB) (Danehill Dancer) will make her U.S. debut in the Gallorette for Roger Attfield. Up the track in the Pride S. (Eng-G2) at Newmarket when last seen in October, the four-year-old adds Lasix for her first attempt on American soil. PAYTON D’ORO (Medaglia d’Oro), who captured the Black-Eyed Susan S. (G2) at this time a year ago, will make her turf debut in a tough spot. However, the Cindy Jones trainee has posted two bullet works at Delaware Park since taking the Bayakoa S. at Oaklawn Park.
Arguably more likely to make an impact are SHARED ACCOUNT (Pleasantly Perfect), runner-up in the Garden City S. (G1) and Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup (G1) last fall following a win in the Lake Placid S. (G2); QUIET MEADOW (El Prado
), who twice missed in photos at the Grade 3 level last season; and last year’s Virginia Oaks (G3) heroine BLIND DATE (Not for Love).
BLAME (Arch), who stamped himself as a horse to watch following wins in the Fayette S. (G2) and Clark H. (G2) against his elders last fall, kicks off his four-year-old campaign in the $100,000 William Donald Schaefer S. (G3) over 1 1/16 miles. The Schaefer, named for the former Maryland governor, will serve as Blame’s prep for the June 12 Stephen Foster H. (G1) at Churchill Downs.
BULLSBAY (Tiznow), the 2009 Whitney H. (G1) hero who turned in an inexplicable dud two weeks ago in the Alysheba S. (G3), is being wheeled back on short rest by trainer Graham Motion. The six-year-old trailed the field of nine in the Alysheba, and will be joined here by that race’s runner-up FLYING PRIVATE (Fusaichi Pegasus). Others of interest are NO ADVANTAGE (Posse), who won this race last year; Stymie S. winner UNDERSTATEMENT (Distorted Humor); and local stakes winner INDIAN DANCE (Indian Charlie).
The top three finishers from last year’s Maryland Sprint H. (G3) — RAVALO (Mutakddim), SILVER EDITION (Silver Deputy) and CELTIC INNIS (Yarrow Brae) — return for Saturday’s $100,000 renewal over six furlongs. A couple who might surprise the aging trio are Grade 3-placed SNAPSHOT (Awesome Again) and Maryland Million Sprint winner ROARING LION (Lion Hearted).
The $100,000 Chick Lang S. (G3), formerly known as the Hirsch Jacobs, attracted a field of six sophomores to go six furlongs. Bettors will have hard time looking past multiple stakes winner COMEDERO (Posse) and the Bob Baffert-trained California shipper QUIET INVADER (Songandaprayer). A more wide-open event is the $70,000 James W. Murphy S., also for three-year-olds, at one mile on the turf. Thirteen were entered in the race formerly known as the Woodlawn.
The Preakness is always a better betting race than the Derby, due to the more normal-sized field and Pimlico being one of the fairest tracks in the country-no rail bias here! Weather will be nice on Saturday, but thunderstorms are likely tomorrow. Unfortunately Calvin is nowhere near as good outside Churchill. None of the newcomers are particularly fast, except Caracortado if he takes to the track. Supposedly First Dude has looked great on the track, so he may be a live longshot.
I always love Preakness Day, since Pimlico is a "local" track and I get to root for all the local yokels on the undercard like Baltimore Bob, Bullsbay, and Ravalo. Pimlico also has one of the best turf courses in the country!

Best bet for me in this is to lay Super Saver. He simply doesn’t look like TC material. May have a bet Paddy O’Prado to reverse KD placings but SS a def lay for me.
I like Schoolyard Dreams at his current price. Derek Ryan his trainer is a good guy and coped well last year with all the Triple Crown mania with Musket Man.

Can’t see the point in that, just because he got the run of things in the Derby does not make him a false favourite; His run will have him there or thereabouts.

Totally Borel’s fault. You can’t keep a horse just off the lead off that sort of pace and expect to win. Very, very poor effort. Jackson Bend ran a blinder actually – could easily be the Belmont winner. Did nothing but stay and stay.

Lookin At Lucky finally had a partially competent jockey on board and he won. Who knows what will bother to turn up in the Belmont apart from (possibly) Ice Box. None of them are anywhere close to exceptional on face value.

Ice Box is very much a Summer Bird-type. Could win everything.

Had £2.47 change on Lookin at lucky at mark jarvis’s yesterday, went round to collect my money today and she doesnt have a clue what race this is in, what price it is etc. She rang the office up, and they told her because i didnt take a price it goes to the tote, which pays 1.34 to the pound???? so she worked it out as 3.30 back. WHAT????? the horse must have been heavy odds on then to get 80p profit from 2.47. I looked when i got home (still got my ticket of course because im not being conned) and it comes up as 6.80 something on the tote if im right. therefore i should have about 8.00 something to collect back. This isnt on and im going to right a complaint to head office!!! Someone please tell me if i have worked this out right.

What’s exchange rate got to do with it? You should get the tote result. If he paid 6.60 ( for $2 US bet ) and you bet 2.47 you should get 3.30 x 2.47 = 8.151
