I don’t see why the FA are getting so upset – they are after all wearing poppies on their training gear, and I believe there is going to be a period’s silence before the game. As the original post says, it has never been an issue before.
I would consider this has plenty to do with recent phenomenon of public displays of emotion. For some reason, if you are not seen to be feeling something, then you cannot possibly be feeling it. The FA seem scared that if there are no poppies on the strips, then then Daily Mail hordes will believe they don’t support ‘our heroes’.
Also, the F365 site included some wise words as to why FIFA might not want to open this can of worms. http://www.football365.com/mediawatch/7 … ects-Later

November 9, 2011 at 11:35 #376889What the hell are you moaning about?
Its a great move our heroes should be not only remembered but also treated as the heroes they are.
I can’t believe you can have a go at the FA for this. Long overdue.
As for FIFA well it has Septic Bladder in charge that just about says it all.
Shut up you tart and answer my question?
Why haven’t the FA campaigned to have a poppy on the England shirts in each of the last eight year?
I’ve had two friends lose their life serving our country, and I’ve wore a poppy in the month of November for the last 25 years, not just at a football match, but walking around the street.
Yet only now, in 2011, do the FA want a poppy on our shirts. They didn’t care less last year when I wrote to them asking for something to be done, they didn’t even bother to reply.
You also say;
"What the hell are you moaning about? Its a great move our heroes should be not only remembered but also treated as the heroes they are."
Which is what I’ve basically said haven’t I? I said that FIFA’s decision not to allow it to happen is ridiculous.
The FA and David Cameron are simply jumping on something that will enable them to look good if successful. But they didn’t care last year did they?
November 9, 2011 at 11:39 #376891May I also add Ian that it appears we are both in agreement regarding the wearing of a poppy and what it stands for.
Our difference of opinion is regarding the FA, you seem to be of the view ‘later rather than never’, whereas I’m of the view ‘why not sooner’.
Fair enough if the poppy just appeared on the shirts this year without a word being said by the FA, but the fact that they are now going to the lengths they appear to be, when they haven’t give a damn in previous years, sickens me.

This unnecessary and rather unsavoury event detracts from the quiet, dignified, moist-eyed, uncomfortable deep deep respect I for one feel every 11.11
Not a time for show: not a time for pageantry: not a time for pride: not a time for politics
A time for reflection and sad sad noble thanks

November 9, 2011 at 20:41 #376977Excellent post Drone
November 13, 2011 at 20:17 #377731Agree with the sentiment addressed by most here.
I wear a poppy every year and see armistice day as very important. But I am beginning to feel queasy about the politicisation of poppy day.
Let’s just drop the hoo haa and finger pointing and just remember the glorious dead.
