I see Perfect Stride, trained by M.Stoute, is entered up in a 1m handicap at Ascot on Saturday. It looks quite competitive. PS didn’t seem to show much in the 2000gns last time, but is still entered in the Irish Champion stakes. He currently has a handicap mark of 89. What’s the SP with him:

Is his trainer being a bit silly and overly-optimistic thinking he can run well in these G1 races, or is he an unexposed and extremely well-handicapped horse, or have his connections just been seduced by his good looks?

Stoute was on record pre-Guineas saying he wasn’t up to that level, the woner just wanted a runner in the race. If I remember correctly, the horse drifted markedly from his morning price.

The rumour before the Guineas was that Kieran Fallon was very keen on him- there was some ante post Guineas money for him. If KF is any judge he should be competitive off 89!

I would not under-estimate how competitive the handicap on Saturday is. You could argue that most of the runners are at least fairly handicapped. It has a few trail blazers, horses like Jadree, Fathsta & Lazy Days, who all ran well in the Britannia, & a couple of unexposed types like Perfect Stride and Navajo Joe. Imo Perfect Stride would have needed to be able to win the Britannia at Royal Ascot off 89 to be competitive here.

I think the handicapper has been very fair with Perfect Stride. He’s been rated accurately on his two 2yo runs. It will be interesting to see if the bookmakers price him up so fairly. On form, PS has surely got to be at least a 6/1 shot or even bigger, hasn’t he?

    At 9/4 I was a layer. At 9/2 I’m a backer.

Get in. Better than a mark of 89 anyway!

I didn’t see him beforehand, but according to the Stoute camp, the horse lives on his nerves somewhat and is a bit of a worrier. I can only presume the drift was related to his pre-race demeanour giving off those vibes. Made no difference though and he’s clearly a smart colt in the making.

Looked fine pre-race to me DJ- I think his drift was a function of his being put in too short this morning- I certainly wouldn’t have entertained him at 9/4.
