A real treat today at Kelso to see such a good horse. No repeat of last year’s shock result when Zaynar was turned over. Ground was pretty soft and both trainer and jockey reported afterwards that the horse will come on a bit for the race.
I don’t think they’ve had that easy a time of it with him in the last few weeks but he’ll surely come on from that. I’m not sure, when push comes to shove, that he might have quite the two mile kick of a Binocular or Menorah but he’s a lovely horse all the same and I hope he proves me wrong.
Here he is in the winner’s enclosure today.

And didn’t he jump slickly. A real joy to see, even on the small screen. Nice to hear such a generous round of applause for him, too – this race is turning into an annual treat.
February 17, 2011 at 19:05 #341062Sounds like a great day Cormack, something special about seeing a good horse.
February 17, 2011 at 19:37 #341072Thanks for the photo Corm, wished I’d been there, not often you see a horse jumping so quickly and nimbly as Peddlers Cross did today.
I have backed the horse in all but one of his races (yes even today at 1/6!) and will be overjoyed if he maintains his unbeaten run in the Champion Hurdle.

I’m seriously tempted to say that he
jumped from fence to fence
– but I won’t!
February 17, 2011 at 20:27 #341084I was there too and he is a nice looking animal. He is going to have to find plenty of improvement on this however. I can see him being flat out at the home turn while Hurricane and Binocular are still on the bridle.
On a side issue i think there is a big prize in Bygones of Brid somewhere. Not quite top class but he has engine and he has been unlucky this season.February 17, 2011 at 21:01 #341089sandwith
I’ve had much the same impression of Bygones Of Brid since seeing him zoom away from a bumper field at Hexham back in autumn 2008. Unfortunately he may go up a few pounds in the handicap, if the result here is taken literally, which would cost him in those contests.

February 17, 2011 at 21:33 #341092Rob, I thought Bogside an appropriately named winner at Kelso today.
Mind you my Scottish geography ain’t that hot and I’m not sure where Bogside is/was!

February 18, 2011 at 09:53 #341137Bogside racecourse is in the vicinity of Irvine, about 12 miles up the coast from Ayr. Some fixtures, fittings and fences are still there, albeit all in an advanced state of decay now, and the course itself hasn’t seen use for about a decade when Point-to-Pointing came to an end there.

February 18, 2011 at 15:32 #341171Jeremy beat me to it with the gen on Bogside. That aside, the novice at Kelso seemed a decent event to me and I suspect Bogside will go on to a fair bit better.
On the downside I wasn’t quite so impressed with Quatica De Poyans who carried his head at a bit of an angle on the flat. He has an alarm tendency to walk through the odd fence and that will hinder him in the best hunter company. He’s aimed at Kelso’s next meeting on March 5th and I hope there will a field to test him.
Premier Sagas has been coming on in leaps and bounds over fences. He won by 22 lengths on occasion, though that says a bit abotu the jumping deficienies of the opposition. Connections of the winenr might have a problem placing him now though as he’ll likely go up in the handicap, probably around 140, and he’s not quite a top bracket novice.

February 18, 2011 at 17:42 #341184From what I saw on TV Peddler’s Cross was not that impressive. Pushed out in the betting in one or two spots for the Champion. However, Peddler’s Cross always finds a lot for pressure, found plenty at Newbury when I saw him. Think it is decieving, the amount he’s probably got in hand and has more pace than it seems in races like yesterdays.
I’ve backed Binocular @ 5/1 for the Champion. But if I had to back something right now, at the prices it would be either Peddler’s Cross @ 11/2 or Oscar Whisky 14/1.
Value Is EverythingFebruary 18, 2011 at 19:19 #341190Thought Peddler’s Cross was more impressive beating Bygones Of Brid yesterday than what Binocular did with Ruthenoise at Sandown.
Peddler’s Cross has stamina in abundance and always quickens again when he’s challenged … a bit like Sea The Stars!!!

I can see this horse taking the Champion by the scruff of the neck in workman style.

Driven out to beat the modest Bygones Of Brid, off a strong pace on ground close to heavy, and over 2 1/4 miles?
If Peddlers Cross wins the Champion Hurdle, I’ll take up skittles.February 19, 2011 at 08:56 #341256Surely shorter than he should be. Just can’t see him having the pace, but I would have said the same about Hardy Eustace.
February 19, 2011 at 09:37 #341266He’s already got Binocular’s scalp.

Although you would be hard-pressed to say that Binocular was within a stone of his best in the Fighting Fifth.
