Interesting things, autographs.
One psychological theory is that the possession of an autograph enhances feelings of self-worth in the recipient as they then have something concrete with which to associate themselves with the persons they have the autograph from. In so doing persons can then legitimise, at a sub-conscious level, enhanced feelings of self worth which are linked to the performance or achievements of the person they recieved the autograph from. A bit like supporting a football team and then you feeling better about yourself because they’ve won, although you’ve had nothing to do with the achievement yourself.
In other words, if I hero-worship and admire, say, Lester Piggott, having his autograph somehow involves me with him and his achievements and consequently increases my own feelings of self worth.
In theory.
November 15, 2006 at 13:50 #30643Wit, I was baffled by this.:o So I phoned them. They were very apologetic and promised to remove it.
Pure flyer on their part I think. They even got the price wrong. Said it would be available in the shops at £30. Would you like to apply your legal mind?
November 15, 2006 at 13:54 #30644
Z,
Well it would be a sort of claim to fame, having your book remaindered before it’s even been published.
Definitely better than having your publisher opt for voluntary liquidation ……
