I’m just thankful Becky Adlington doesn’t do backstroke. With a hooter like hers she’d surely look like Jaws!
August 15, 2008 at 12:20 #177066Team GB are set to win a mass of golds over the weekend – let’s hope the nerves don’t get the better of our lot.
Becky Adlington is fav to win her second Gold early tomorrow morning and we have a few chances of gold in the sailing with Ben Ainsley almost a shoe in. In the rowing I think we have six or seven finalists over the weekend with talk of winning at least three of them. But in cycling we have stacks of chances and could easily win six plus gold medals (one in the bag already).
In athletics Kelly Sotherton has a chance in the heptathlon, while dear old Paula will be stutting her stuff in the marathon. I’d love to see Joe Pavey win a medal in the 10,000m also.
Come on team GB – make us proud.

Yes, it certainly got me excited Clivex, amazing what live sport can do to you isn’t it?

Becky Adlington was magnificent also this morning, shaving two seconds off the previous world record that had stood for 19 years.
I’m just about to settle down and watch the cyclists do their thing now. Team GB may no longer be a major force in athletics, but we have certainly become the nation to beat in rowing and cycling now.

August 16, 2008 at 22:11 #177165A lot of good action tomorrow
Even when we werent winning so frequently, cycling and rowing were two events i enjoyed. Maybe cos i cycle (slowly) and my school was probably the best state school fo rowing in the country (when it was a state school)
What is pleasing is the genuine enthusiasm and openess of the interviewees
no Wayne Rooney platitudes….
August 18, 2008 at 20:25 #177323At the very least there’s surely another sailing gold tomorrow barring an act of God, and quite possibly more of the same colour in the boxing and cycling. This bumper haul is really ratcheting up the expectations up to which the class of 2012 will have to live, but that is no bad thing necessarily.
I see Boris Gonk has wasted little time in attempting to make capital of the feelgood feeling in announcing a victory parade, mind….

August 19, 2008 at 21:26 #177437Well done to all concerned (even Christine Ohifogot).
Just goes to show what can be done when the athletes are single-minded and well coached and the facilities are there.
My star of the show so far is a guy that most won’t have heard of.
It’s an Aussie coach called Shane Sutton who’s done so much to help the GB cycling team. He’s had a huge impact in giving the riders in his care "the edge" that makes them winners not just contenders. Hope we can keep him here.August 19, 2008 at 22:38 #177443It’s an Aussie coach called Shane Sutton who’s done so much to help the GB cycling team. I believe standard practice in these situations is to refuse to give him a new contract so that he buggers off to coach someone else. Usually Australia.

Without wishing to generalise too much I think that it’s not just coincidence that many of the athletes have benefitted from a more open handed approach from this government which contrasts markedly to the results obtained by the generation before who had to pretty much do it all at their own expense unless they were at the "right" schools.
August 21, 2008 at 19:13 #177585Ive decided to try and get swimming and cycling lessons from Vicky Pendleton and Becky Adlington.
Got a feeling i may be a very slow learner.

If you’ve any stamina left, why not get Kirsty Milkshake to teach you to ride?

Indeed. I read the other day that at Sydney 57% of the British team were educated privately (from a pool of 7% of the general population). Anything the government can do to balance that figure in the correct direction has to be welcomed.
After all if those who’ve attended private school can overcome their archetypal fecklessness and become Olympic athletes just think what normal people can achieve.
August 24, 2008 at 12:07 #177963Well done Cav.
China – 100 medals
USA – 110 medalsThat’s bet landed I reckon – you did back ‘overall medals’ didn’t you and not just ‘most golds’?

On the subject of medals tallies I was very suprised to see that South Africa won just one solitary silver medal. Poor effort from a country you’d expect to be on a par with Australia/GB- ish
