Yee in the triathlon was brilliant Nathan. The coverage missed him closing, he looked dead and buried then suddenly he was right up behind and cruising past.
I wonder if anyone who knew Lyles had covid steamed into Tebogo at 9/2, I sure would have. Great run by Tebogo regardless though, given that he was beating his chest before crossing the line didn’t dip he probably had had a bit more had he been under pressure.
A simply phenomenal run by McLoughlin-Levrone and what a throw in the javelin.
August 9, 2024 at 00:39 #1704238Yes, a tremendous performance from Arshad Nadeem to win gold in the javelin for Pakistan. 2 throws over 90 metres and a new Olympic record. Great to see Birmingham Commonwealth Games form being upheld.
August 9, 2024 at 20:42 #1704276Brilliant effort from Johnson-Thompson, I don’t think she could have done much better. Three in a row in arguably the toughest athletics event out there is simply astonishing from Thiam. No shame whatsoever in coming second to her.
August 10, 2024 at 00:13 #1704298And Khelif wins the gold medal…
August 10, 2024 at 07:58 #1704309Helpfully the IBA held a press conference earlier in the week the clear the situation up. During it, it was claimed that a testosterone level test was done, then another senior member of the organisation said it was a chromosome test. If they can’t even agree amongst themselves what happened then why should we listen to them?
There seems little to no doubt she has been female since birth (she’s from Algeria, probably not known for its proliferation of rainbow flags all over the place) so clearly she should not be anywhere near the male tournament. It would therefore seem to be a question of ‘does she hold an unfair advantage over other women’. Until proven otherwise, we must surely assume that she doesn’t.
August 10, 2024 at 08:31 #1704311Massive day today for Max Burgin in the 800m final at 6.05pm. Very slim chance of a medal but to reach the final was a big surprise to him and his family. He’s best mates with my nephew who’s been out in Paris for the last few days watching him.
Max has the world lead time over 800m at various ages when he was a teenager but injuries have not helped his career progress but at 22 he still could have it all ahead of him.
We will be cheering him on. Come on Max!
August 10, 2024 at 10:28 #1704324It appears we are not even allowed to question this boxer’s participation now:
August 10, 2024 at 14:20 #1704382He’s had his Facebook account ‘seemingly’ deleted over something he Tweeted i.e. said on a different platform? I guess it’s possible but it’s pure speculation.
It’s been questioned all over the place, without much evidence beyond the contradictory testimony of the IBA, one of their statements refers to them (the two boxers) fighting against ‘other women’ which suggests they are considered female by the organisation. Total mess.
Not that the IOC comes out of this particularly well either, they should have seen it coming.
As I understand it, boxing’s place at the Olympics is in serious doubt, even before this debacle, due to things like judging issues. Perhaps both boxing and the Olympics would be better off if it’s dropped.
Interesting to hear about Max Burgin, Homer. It’ll be a tough race but perhaps as with the 1500, someone like him could come through while those at the front are knocking lumps out of each other. We’ve been blessed with many great races over the last week so let’s hope for another.
August 10, 2024 at 19:55 #1704421Well done Emmanuel Wanyonyi of Kenya. One of 12 children. Left school at 10 to herd his family’s cattle. Mocked for his running but knew he was fast and it could be the way out of poverty for his family. Ran faster than he’d ever run in Paris tonight and won 800 metres gold medal. It’s these stories that make the Olympics.
August 10, 2024 at 20:52 #1704423London was great but Paris has been the best ever
August 10, 2024 at 21:08 #1704425The athletics has been as good a meeting as I can recall. The overall standard has been very good and plenty of great races.
A shame the US women’s relay team couldn’t quite erase one of ‘those’ world records.
August 10, 2024 at 22:40 #1704431And now Lin Yu Ting wins gold. What an incredible coincidence…
August 11, 2024 at 06:46 #1704442I wonder if anyone has said or written anything recently that might have got them both fired up.
August 11, 2024 at 07:30 #1704444August 11, 2024 at 07:45 #1704445I think one of the great injustices of sport was the barring of Caster Semenya from certain athletics events. They told her she could run the 5000m, an event where she was not as good, but could not run in her favourite events of the 800 and 1500m. Clearly she was female just that she had natural male testosterone levels higher than normal in females.
I think the boxing is a tricky one. Obviously these athletes are women but when you are beating the living daylights out of your opponent there must be a safety issue, although I suppose that applies in all boxing and why there are weight divisions.
How would these women have fared in the male boxing and if allowed to compete, would this be considered legal woman battering by a bloke?
August 11, 2024 at 09:06 #1704451‘What ifs’ are rarely helpful but if you stuck them both in the male category I think you’d find rather a large number of those calling them ‘men’ leaping to their defence, citing the almost complete lack of evidence that they are male and the fact that they have both been female since birth.
The fact is they both fought for five years or so as women, seemingly without question, including at the last Olympics (where they both lost). If we accept for a moment the idea that they are men then why is nobody asking how that happened? I have seen no suggestion that either is trans so either they have always been men (at least since they started boxing) or they have not. Nobody has suggested testosterone related doping so it’s not that. They are being called ‘men’ so it can’t be an intersex case either.
Unless and until someone ponies up credible evidence then I have nothing to add.
August 11, 2024 at 22:12 #1704505Hodgkinson quite rightly in the order of 1/3 to win SPOTY.
If I was punting I’d back Lando Norris each way at 33/1, 1/3 odds 1-2. He’s 3/1 to win the Formula 1 title which finishes on 8th December, shortly before the ceremony. Should he pull it off, it’ll be in the last race or two and he’ll benefit from it being fresh in everyone’s memory. Plus the sporting public has not forgotten the manner of 2/9 favourite Verstappen’s 2021 win over Lewis Hamilton. In that eventuality, I’d make him far shorter than 11/1 to finish top two so a value bet in my book.
The Olympics has been great fun but you need gold to win SPOTY and I don’t see a massive challenge to Hodgkinson coming from the other 13. There will be the overall feeling that Team GB has underachieved.
