Was only really planning on Surrounding and Silver Service today, with tomorrow’s racing being so good.

Surrounding is out, but I give an EW chance to Gustavus Weston.

Silver Service looked way overpriced, and I had to take a chance, really liked his run two or three weeks back.

I’ve thrown my old pal Numerian in, but he’s surely got his work cut out to trouble Broome.

    Curragh
    Gladness – Gustavus Weston 66’s EW 4pl
    Alleged – Numerian 14’s
    1615 – Silver Service 22’s EW 6pl

Hard one to take with Gustavus Weston. He missed the break, and that cost him in the end. Would definitely have placed otherwise. As for Numerian. Small bet or not, think I’ll have to give up with him. He’s looking hard to place for them, and he’s one of those who I don’t think they know what to do with.

Scottish National Day, and got to have a go. Already put my picks on Big Races, but loads of other good races today as well.

My old pal Euchen Glen back out today. He took a while to get going last year, but that was off the back of an extended lay off. Gives weight away all round, but he still looks the best of these. On his best day, I’d think he’s way overpriced. The worry is first time out, and obviously that weight concession.

In The Spring Cup, taking a chance with The Gill Brothers. Looked unlucky last time, and he looks overpriced.

Great card at Tramore. I’ll go with Brex Drago (Non Runner) and Room To Roam. Both big prices. Reluctant to add them with so many selections, but I’ll hopefully get money back from them at some point. Ideally before the off, but we’ll see. Good to see Western Boy with Rachel Blackmore up, but at this stage, a bit short for me.

Finest Surprise – Euchen Glen 16’s
Scottish Champ Hdl – Anna Bunina 25’s
1438 Tramore – Room To Roam
Spring Cup – The Gill Brothers 33’s EW6p
Scottish National – Dingo Dollar 11’s
Scottish National – Lake View Lad EW 7pl
Scottish National – The Ferry Master 14’s

    Yet another crossbar day.

Scottish National was a good race for me, making a decent profit from Dingo Dollar and The Ferry Master, as they both went way low three out, but I just wonder what the trainer had to say about it afterwards. Lake View Lad topped it off nicely with the EW money at 40’s.

Room to Roam was a winner before the off for me, as he got hammered close to post time, while I took my stake back in running with Anna Bunina.

Euchen Glen faded badly, but happy enough with him, and he’s hardly off the radar with a full season ahead. Maybe York next for him.

The one disaster today was The Gill Brothers. Very poor choice, and never sighted after a furlong.

Getting a profit on a day with no winners I should be happy with, but I’d really have loved Dingo in particular to win, and empty feeling at the end.

Wouldn’t mind bringing my season to a halt now, but two weeks to go, and just Sandown and Punchestown to contend with.

    Hopefully have nothing midweek.

Tried hard to dodge it midweek, but always enjoy the April Meeting at Perth.

Be betting in each race, but the only one I’m happy putting up is Valtor. He’s a bit too obvious, off his current mark, but Aintree was the plan with him if he had snuck in, but having missed out, they come here instead of Sandown.

He was much better last time, and I’ve been waiting for a go on him for a while now. He’s a fair price off this mark.

    Valtor 8’s

Valtor worked out quite well in the end. I’d no intention of topping up, but when he hit 22’s, I had to have a bit more on, and I comfortably got a profit on him in running, trading very low. Looked the winner most of the way, and he should be winning soon. Doubt I’ll get 22’scagsin though.

Pleased I’ve left the rest of the meeting alone, for all it’s smashing meeting, but I’d have had no winners, and even those who I kept an eye on have been stuffed.

Giving Trees Valley another try tomorrow morning in the 1855 at Kilbeggan. As I said last week, I wasn’t too disappointed in her, and took plenty from her run.

Back over fences tomorrow. She ran ok over them last October, and would have been closer but for getting the third last wrong. I’m happy to stick with her when the price is right this summer.

Bar that mistake at Thurles in October, she jumped really well, and with her ground tomorrow, really happy to chance her at the price. I’d happily top up if she went bigger.

Can see the angle certainly. Pays to be prominent round there and she’s at her best when she’s allowed to be prominent, have to hope her jumping holds up. Same can be said about the favourite, back on better ground, she’ll be up near the front and i suspect she’ll take the beating given Codd’s on trying to catch Patrick again.

Cheers Jack. Very happy with her, and money back from her in running easily, which I’ll take. As I said yesterday, she’ll continue to be followed when she’s a price. Sure she’ll pay her way this summer. Hope you went with Codd’s.

    On to tomorrow.

I’m with El Presente tomorrow in the big one at a decent Antepost. I think Plan of Attack takes it, but I’m hoping to lay El Presente to pay for my Crosshue Boy Antepost. I’m definitely adding The Young Master, I just can’t leave him here. No issue with him going fresh, although this layoff may be pushing it. Last big race of the season here, so might add another, and looking at Smooth Stepper or Doing Fine.

Elsewhere on the card, I’m hoping my old pal Frodon wins, but I’ve went with Militarian Antepost. It’s unlikely, but I’d love him to grab second.

I stupidly missed the 6’s on Sceau Royal for The Celebration Chase, but managed to nab 9-2.

In the opener, I’m going with Herbiers, who’s been good to me this year, while Solo, who’s not been so good to me this year, is probably worth another try. I’ve spent the last few months tracking him, so seriously considering him.

Also giving a serious look at Limerick to Flagged, and just taken the 5’s, while also considering Melburnian. I’ll make my mind up late with Melburnian and Solo.

    1345 Limerick – Flagged 5’s
    Novices Final – Herbiers
Oaksey Chase – Militarian 66’s EW
Celebration Chase – Sceau Royal 9-2
B365 Gold Cup – El Presente 33’s EW
B365 Gold Cup – The Young Master EW 6p

Much better today, with Flagged, Herbiers, and El Presente all doing the business, while a decent profit in running from Militarian.

Flagged was hit with a R4, but still happy, and looks a nice sort, while I was able to get 11’s for Herbiers in the lead up. Three out of three from him this season for me, and safe to say I’ll be following him next season. Promising horse.

Sceau Royal was a bit of a disappointment, and after the earlier winners, I backed Solo. I doubt I’ll be backing him again.

WD today, I’d say your biggest cheer was for Frodon though.

Thanks Grass. Oh yeah, delighted with Frodon, great to see him fight back.

Sorry for late reply Bob, that’s me just back.

    Re: Cloth Cap.

I wasn’t too surprised that he came up short, but I was still a wee bit disappointed. I’m hoping that he can be as good next season, but that new mark is going to be hard to justify. I think you called that Kelso race right, and it wasn’t as big a performance as it looked.

Good luck this week, I’ll try to get my picks in every day.

Cheers mate. Yeah far too high for that Kelso run, definitely a “nothing” race. It’ll take the poor bugger about three years to get his mark back down.

Seen your picks for Day One, best of luck.

    Punchestown Day One

The opener is a cracker, and I’ve split stakes with a pair who ran well in defeat last time, Fighting Fit, and Great Bear.

Great Bear is the bigger fancy of the two. I took a wee bit at 14’s yesterday, but most of is it at 11’s, while I took the 10’s Fighting Fit.

I buckled in the next and took Dewcup EW. It’s unlikely, but it looked the wrong price.

Don’t know where to start with the 1650. What a strong race, and could have changed my mind every two minutes. Magic Tricks and Call Me Lyreen are real notebook horses, while Champagne Gold looks a huge danger. Landed on Midnight Run and The Mouse Doctor. Midnight Run looked destined for the top, but after some shockers last year, his last run over fences was highly encouraging. He’s clearly been held back, thrown in on his best, and Jordan Gainfords claim is very handy. Big chance. The Mouse Doctor is an old favourite, and he’s got a solid EW chance.

In the 1755, I like the look of both Nonbinding, and Springwell Bay on jockey bookings, but it’s complete guesswork. I might take the 12’s on Springwell, but I’ll see later. Very guessy race.

I can’t believe they’re still running Enniskillen, and I’m uncomfortable betting a 16yo, but he’s been a great horse to follow over the years. Feel as if I’ve been betting him here forever. Loves it here, currently 22’s, and he’s the perfect horse for laying in running when he’s a price. I’ll hopefully get a nice price before the off.

    1540 – Fighting Fit 10’s
    1540 – Great Bear 14’s
    1615 – Dewcup 40’s EW
    1650 – Midnight Run 18’s
    1650 – The Mouse Doctor EW 7pls
    1900 – Enniskillen

Very run of the mill day.

Money back for Great Bear, Fighting Fit, and Midnight Run, but Dewcup and The Mouse Doctor were shockers.

Enniskillen was the hardest one. Got 95’s before the off, and looked to be an easy profit until he slipped. Thankfully he looked none the worse.

These are picks so far, but will definitely be adding more, especially in 1900, with Annamix, Or Jaune De Somoza, and Midnight Maestro appealing most.

    Day Two
    1540 Bay Hill EW 7pls
    1615 Suprise Package 33’s EW
    1755 Melon
    1900 Ten Ten 10’s

You with Easy Game and Livelovelaugh today Bob?

Good card today, but it’s obviously very tough.

Nah, I am adding to that list, but sadly not that pair. It’ll be a hard watch with Livelovelaugh, but that’s the race that’s giving me headaches. Almost certainly adding Or Jaune De Somoza, but I’ve still got Midnight Marstro, and back in a handicap Annamix, to consider. Some race that.

As for Easy Game, itching to bet him, but I’ll stick with Melon.

    Good luck today

Day was made by Suprise Package, and as impressive a 33-1 winner as I could’ve hoped for.

In the opener, got Bay Hill at a crazy 120’s before the race, which told its own story, but easily got money back from him, and he looks one to note for big summer staying chases.

In the later races, decent EW returns from Midnight Maestro 28’s, and O’Toole 40’s (both on Punch thread). Also got money back for the luckless Ten Ten.

Really happy with that today, and the only real disappointment was Melon, who was well beaten.
